Modern Family's Elizabeth Pena: Cause of Death Revealed to Be Due to Alcohol

Elizabeth Pena passed away at the age of 55 due to cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol, TMZ reports.

The 55-year-old actress, who guest starred on Modern Family as Sofia Vergara‘s character’s mother, had the disease for months, but it became worse around the time of her death.

Elizabeth had acute gastrointestinal bleeding hours before her death, which ultimately caused her heart to stop working and caused her death.

Sofia Vergara passes time with a little shopping spree on Rodeo Drive on Wednesday afternoon (October 15) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

That same day, the 42-year-old Modern Family actress mourned the loss of her on-screen mother Elizabeth Pena.

“‘@SteveLevitan: We were so sad to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Pena. A member of our Family, she will be missed. #RIPElizabethPena’🙏RIP,” Sofia retweeted from the show’s co-creator Steve Levitan.

Sophia‘s co-star Jesse Tyle Ferguson also paid his respects to the late actress.

“The entire cast and crew are very sad to say goodbye to one of our Modern Family members. RIP to the beautiful & talented #ElizabethPena,” he tweeted.

Elizabeth Pena Dead - 'Modern Family' Guest Star Dies at 55

Elizabeth Pena has sadly passed away at the age of 55.

The actress is well known for her guest star role on Modern Family as the mother of Sofia Vergara‘s character Gloria and most recently wrapped up work on the El Rey Network series Matador.

Elizabeth died on Tuesday (October 14) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, though no cause of death has been revealed yet, according to Latino Review.

Some of Elizabeth‘s memorable film roles include the 1990 horror film Jacob’s Ladder and the 1996 film Lone Star.
