Emmy Rossum to Play Angelyne in New Limited Series from Husband Sam Esmail

Emmy Rossum is set to play the Los Angeles icon Angelyne in an upcoming limited series, which is being developed by her husband Sam Esmail.

The series is based on a Hollywood Reporter article that exposed the true identity of Angelyne, whose real name is Renee Goldberg. She was born in Poland in 1950 to survivors of the Holocaust and moved to L.A. with her family as a young girl. She is famous for driving her pink Cadillac around Hollywood and appearing on billboards.

“I have always been fascinated by the enigma that is Angelyne,” Emmy said in a statement (via THR). “At a young age, I can vividly remember staring up at her on a billboard above me and wondering, ‘Who is that woman?’ Gary Baum’s investigative journalism has finally unearthed the true, complex identity of the infamous woman who has fascinated Los Angeles for over 30 years. From the moment I read Gary’s recent piece, I knew I had to tell this story. It’s a poignant and bizarre tale about the hunger for fame, the sexualization of women and the erasing of past traumas.”

Emmy and Sam will executive produce the series, which is being shopped to cable and streaming outlets.

Emmy Rossum Launches Burt's Bees Beauty's New I Am Not Synthetic Campaign!

Emmy Rossum happily strikes a pose while attending the launch of Burt’s Bees Beauty’s I Am Not Synthetic Campaign held at the Eventi Hotel on Wednesday (October 25) in New York City.

That same day, the 31-year-old Shameless star rocked a jumpsuit to attend a press junket for the campaign, which encourages women to embrace their authentic beauty and think twice about the products they use to look their best.

“I’ve been using Burt’s Bees products on Shameless for a long time,” Emmy told PeopleStyle. “Fiona has a very natural look. The Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm is all we use on Fiona, and their eyeliner as well. So I was very excited to get involved with the campaign. The products themselves are made with natural ingredients and not tested on animals and that really hit home on a number of levels for me.”

“I think in the last year or so, probably closer to the election, women felt more fired up than ever,” Emmy added. ” I feel like this is a second wave of women’s liberation, feeling empowered to be yourself, speak your mind, be passionate about the things you believe in and stand up for what you believe in. So this campaign is not just about being synthetic, it’s the idea of being a real woman.”

FYI: Emmy is wearing a Rochas Paris dress and Alezan earrings at the launch. She’s wearing Selim Mouzannar rings and Walters Faith earrings with the black jumpsuit.

Emmy went on to commend Jennifer Lawrence for sharing her own story about a producer telling her to lose 15 pounds and revealed that she’s had men and women in the industry make comments about her weight as well.

“The story Jennifer Lawrence told about being made to feel not thin enough, not pretty enough, constantly physically compared to others broke my heart and felt all too familiar,” Emmy tweeted. “I have had FEMALE producers make comments to me about what I’m putting in my mouth. Things like ‘Don’t get fat. No one will watch this.’”

Emmy then sent out a call to action to get everyone to “be our best selves.”
