Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has returned to social media for the first time since May of 2018.

She posted two selfies with the caption, “祝大家新春快乐、平安健康！爱你们。,” which Google translates to read, “I wish you all a Happy New Year, safe and healthy! Love you guys.”

It’s been a rocky couple of months for the 37-year-old actress, who reportedly owed to $128 million in back taxes, fees, and additional fines. She disappeared from the public eye for several months and it’s rumored she was in “residential detention.” She previously broke her silence on her alleged crime.

According to a report from Variety via a Chinese newspaper, she is now back in Beijing after spending time in “residential detention” and was being held at a “holiday resort” near Wuxi.

Fan Bingbing is speaking out for the first time since she went missing from the public eye.

The 37-year-old actress, who hasn’t been seen since July 1, is facing a massive fine from the Chinese government for allegedly not paying her taxes.

Bingbing owes up to $128 million in back taxes, fees, and additional fines. If she pays the huge sum of money, she will escape criminal prosecution as it’s her first offense.

After the Chinese government confirmed the fines via a report in state-run media outlet Xinhua, Fan took to her Weibo social media account to release a statement.

“I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the society which trusted me; I failed the fans who liked me,” Fan reportedly said, according to translations.

“Everything I ever accomplished came from the country and the people’s support”, Fan said. “I would be nothing without the party and the country’s good policies, as well as the love and support of the people”.

Fan says she will pay the fines: “I totally accepted all of them, and will raise funds to pay my taxes and penalties regardless of any obstacles.”

Fan Bingbing has been missing from the public eye for over three months and the Chinese government has provided an update on the case.

There have been rumors that the 37-year-old actress (who had a birthday two weeks ago) is in prison, though no official updates have yet been made on her whereabouts.

The Chinese government has confirmed through a report in the state-run media outlet Xinhua that Bingbing is facing an $86 million government fine, according to CNN. She also will have to pay unpaid taxes and fees amounting to $42 million. If she pays the nearly $130 million on time, she will not be prosecuted.

There has been speculation that Bingbing‘s disappearance is linked to a tax evasion scandal. An article on a state-run media outlet had said last month that she was brought “under control and about to receive legal judgment,” but the article was deleted.

Bingbing is best known to American audiences for her role in the X-Men franchise and she was set to begin work on the upcoming movie 355 alongside Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, and Penelope Cruz.

There is speculation that Fan Bingbing, one of the most popular Chinese actresses in the world, is missing.

The 36-year-old actress was reportedly last seen in public on July 1 and she has been silent on social media since July 23.

THR reports that some of the theories spreading around social media are that Fan is “under the custody of Chinese authorites” and that “she has escaped to Los Angeles to seek asylum in the United States.”

Fan‘s name was brought into a tax evasion scandal in China after a TV host leaked documents that showed an unnamed movie star, who was identified online as Fan, was involved in an alleged tax-dodge scheme. Her reps have denied the allegations.

The Chinese government has reportedly been trying to crack down on the amount of money paid to celebrities as officials think the big paydays send the wrong message to young people.

Tabloids in China are taking shots at Fan and she was recently ranked last in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ list of the most socially responsible stars in China. The list was made to determine which stars are a “strong role model” to fans and they gave Fan a score of zero.

Fan is scheduled to star in the upcoming movie 355 with Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, and Lupita Nyong’o. She is best known to American audiences for her work in the X-Men movies.

Jessica and the ladies were also accompanied by the upcoming film’s director Simon Kinberg as they posed for photographs at a photo call for 355 as part of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival that same day.

All the women will play international spies in the movie, which is described to be in the style of other films like The Bourne Identity, Mission: Impossible and James Bond.
