Oscars Best Picture Mistake in 2017 - What Went Wrong, What Happened Next?

One of the most memorable moments in Academy Awards history happened at last year’s show when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong winner for the biggest award of the night, Best Picture.

So, how did that moment actually happen and what happened next to everyone involved? Let’s take a look back at that moment in time!

Beatty and Dunaway announce the wrong winner

  • The former Bonnie and Clyde co-stars presented Best Picture together. When Warren opened up the envelope, he looked a little confused and ultimately let Faye announce the winner. She said La La Land and the team from that film came up on stage to accept the award.

Moonlight really won!

  • La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz came forward after some commotion to tell everyone, “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke… This is not a joke. Moonlight has won Best Picture.” He then showed the real card from the actual envelope to the crowd. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!

Beatty explains what happened

  • Warren came on stage after the wrong winner was announced to explain what happened. “I want to tell you what happened,” Warren said. “I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny. Thank you very much. This is Moonlight, the best picture.” WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!

Oscars 2018: Warren Beatty & Faye Dunaway to Present Best Picture, Again!

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are reportedly going to present again at the Oscars, though hopefully this time they announce the right winner!

The former Bonnie and Clyde co-stars will present the Academy Award for Best Picture at the event at this Sunday (March 4) in Hollywood.

Last year, they mistakenly announced La La Land as the winner of Best Picture instead of Moonlight as they had the wrong envelope.

TMZ reports that the two stars rehearsed their bit on Thursday and went through their lines twice.

Faye reportedly said “presenting is better the second time around” and Warren followed up by jokingly saying, “the winner is Gone with the Wind.”

Faye Dunaway Speaks Out About Oscars Best Picture Mistake: 'I Felt Very Guilty'

Faye Dunaway is opening up for the first time about the moment she and Warren Beatty announced the wrong winner for Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars.

While it was later revealed that the two were handed the wrong envelope, the 76-year-old Bonnie and Clyde actress said she was “completely stunned” at the time and thought Warren might have been joking.

“We took the card out, and he didn’t say anything,” Faye told Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News. “He paused, he looked over me, off stage… and I finally said, ‘You’re impossible!’”

“I thought he was joking,” she went on. “I thought he was stalling. Warren‘s like that, he kind of holds the power… but it’s part of his charm. I read the name of the film on the card.”

“You don’t know what has happened,” she added. “I [felt] very guilty – I thought I could have done something, surely, why couldn’t I have seen Emma Stone‘s name on the card?”

Faye Dunaway on Best Picture Fail: 'I'm Not Going to Speak About It'

It looks like Faye Dunaway won’t be taking any questions about the huge La La Land/Moonlight Best Picture mix-up that happened at the 2017 Oscars.

What happened was: Faye and Warren Beatty presented the award for Best Picture to La La Land, but really, the winner was supposed to be Moonlight. It turns out that Warren read the card for Best Actress (which went to Emma Stone for La La Land). So, fans are wondering why Warren and Faye didn’t question the writing on the card.

Faye reportedly told THR columnist Scott Feinberg, “No. I’m not going to speak about it,” when asked about what happened.
