Frank Ocean Gives Rare Interview, Explains Why He Snubbed the Grammys

Frank Ocean has given one of his first interviews in years and in it, he explains why decided not to submit his latest albums for Grammy Awards consideration.

The 29-year-old singer, who has two Grammys to his name and many more nominations already, made his decision to protest the organization.

“That institution certainly has nostalgic importance,” Frank told the New York Times. “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”

“I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated,” he added. “I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”

Frank noted during the interview that only a few black artists have ever won the Album of the Year prize.

It looks like Frank never told his pal Kanye West about his plans because the rapper vowed to boycott the awards show if the singer is not nominated in 2017.

Kanye West Will Boycott Grammys if Frank Ocean is Not Nominated

Kanye West has announced that he will not attend the 2017 Grammy Awards if his friend Frank Ocean does not receive nominations.

It was previously revealed that Frank is not eligible for awards at the upcoming ceremony because neither of his recently released albums, Blonde and Endless, were submitted for consideration.

Kanye still thinks that Frank should be considered for awards.

“I’ll tell you this right now, if his album is not nominated in no categories, I’m not showing up to the Grammys,” Kanye said during his concert on Saturday night (October 22). “As artists, we’ve got to come together to fight the bulls—.”

Frank was previously nominated for Album of the Year and Best New Artist in 2013. He picked up two awards that year, including Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “No Church in the Wild” with Kanye and Jay Z.

Frank Ocean's Albums 'Blonde' & 'Endless' Did Not Qualify for Grammy Awards

Frank Ocean is ineligible for the upcoming 2017 Grammy Awards because he missed the filing deadline.

The 28-year-old singer released two albums over the summer – visual album Endless with Def Jam and Blonde, which he released on his own – and it looks like neither album was submitted in time for Grammy consideration, Grammy reps confirmed to Billboard.

The deadline for Grammy consideration was September 30.

The reasoning behind why Frank‘s labels, management, or representatives didn’t submit his albums is still unknown.

Blonde debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200, and had over 270,000 downloads within the first week, which was the third highest album sell of the year.

Frank has won two Grammy awards, including “Best Urban Contemporary Album” for his album Channel Orange in 2013.

Frank Ocean Thanks Fans & Reflects on Recording 'Blonde'

Frank Ocean is speaking out after releasing his highly-anticipated new record Blonde.

The 28-year-old singer took to his Tumblr account to thank fans for their support.

“I had the time of my life making all of this,” Frank wrote. “thank you all. especially those of you who never let me forget I had to finish. which is basically every one of ya’ll. haha. love you.”

He also opened up about making the album.

“Two years ago I found an image of a kid with her hands covering her face,” Frank wrote. “A seatbelt reached across her torso, riding up her neck and a mop of blonde hair stayed swept, for the moment, behind her ears. Her eyes seemed clear and calm but not blank, the road behind her seemed the same. I put myself in her seat then I played it all out in my head.”
