Broadway Stars Come Together in Times Square, Shutdown to Extend to Mid-2021

So many great Broadway stars came together in New York City this week to film a performance to give people hope for the return of live theater!

Bernadette Peters and Andrew Rannells were among the stars who participated in NYCNext’s A Moment for Broadway event on Wednesday (October 7) in NYC’s Times Square.

Also in attendance were Gavin Creel, Telly Leung, Carolee Carmello, Norm Lewis, Javier Munoz, Joel Grey, Eden Espinosa, Sierra Boggess, Kate Baldwin, Stark Sands, Jennifer Damiano, Ari’el Stachel, Andrea Burns, among others.

Some unfortunate news was just revealed about Broadway.

NBC New York is reporting that the Broadway League is going to announce on Friday that Broadway will not return until May 30, 2021, at the earliest.

Broadway shows have been shut down since March 13, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The shutdown was supposed to end in January 2021, but now will be extended as the pandemic is still not under control and it’s not safe for thousands of people to sit in an indoor theater together.

The productions that come back to Broadway will return across a series of rolling dates.

Broadway's Gavin Creel Believes He Has Coronavirus, Hasn't Been Tested Though

Broadway star Gavin Creel says he has coronavirus, though he hasn’t been officially tested to confirm his belief.

The 43-year-old Tony-winning actor opened up during a live stream with his friends Audra McDonald and Will Swenson on Saturday (March 21).

Gavin says he contracted the virus while starring in the musical Waitress in London. He and his longtime BFF Sara Bareilles played their final performance in the show on March 14 so that they could fly back to the U.S. before things got worse with the pandemic.

“I’m feeling okay. I haven’t been tested, but I have coronavirus,” Gavin said during the live stream. “I found out because one of my castmates from Waitress tested positive and I have every symptom, but I feel good. I’ve been staying inside. I’ll be inside for the duration.”

Gavin comes into the video at around the 20-minute mark.

The live stream was organized to support The Actors Fund, an organization that is looking after actors who are out of work because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sara Bareilles to Leave 'Waitress' in London Early Because of Coronavirus Travel Restrictions

Sara Bareilles has announced that she and co-star Gavin Creel will be leaving the London cast of Waitress earlier than planned so that they can get back to the U.S. before travel restrictions are put in place because of Coronavirus.

The two stars were scheduled to play the roles of Jenna and Dr. Pomatter in the musical through March 21, but they will now play their final show on March 14.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to inform you that Gavin and I will be playing our final performance the evening of March 14,” Sara wrote in a letter posted on social media. “Given the recent international travel restrictions, we’ve made the very difficult decision, before any further measures are implemented, to return home. It was an agonizing choice as we have so loved our time here at the Adelphi diner. The warmth and generosity of the West End audiences have been unparalleled.”

“It was a gift to get the opportunity to tell this story again alongside this masterful cast, crew, and band. We will miss you all dearly. Sugar Butter London Forever, Sara and Gavin,” they concluded the letter.

Sara and Gavin, who are longtime BFFs, previously starred in the musical together on Broadway in January 2019.

While West End shows in London are currently performing as usual, all of Broadway has been canceled through April 12.
