Godzilla vs. Kong continues to dominate.

The mega-monster movie stayed strong at No. 1 at the box office over the past weekend, making it the top-grossing Hollywood movie of the pandemic globally, THR reported Sunday (April 18).

The movie pushed past the $390 million mark globally, beating out Tenet‘s global earnings of $365 million last year.

It also brought in $7.7 million in the United States, reaching $80.5 million in its third week domestically. Overseas, it brought in $12.2 million for a total of $309.7 million and $390.2 million worldwide.

Godzilla Vs. Kong is as huge as the titular movie monsters!

The big-screen battle between Godzilla and King Kong pulled in an additional estimated $13.3 million in its second weekend at the box office, resulting in a running domestic total of roughly $69.5 million, Deadline reported Sunday (April 11).

This makes the movie the highest grossing film at the domestic box office since the pandemic began to cause theater closures in 2020.

Godzilla vs. Kong is on track to being the most successful movie since the pandemic started over a year ago!

The new film has already earned $27.9 million in the three days since it has been open in theaters and it’s on track to pull in a $42 million gross for the full 5-day opening, according to Deadline.

The original estimate heading into the weekend was that Godzilla vs. Kong could earn around $20 million to $30 million for the full 5-day weekend. The film has easily roared past those numbers!

Kyle Chandler is part of the Godzilla vs. Kong cast, but you’re not going to see that much of him in the movie.

A new investigation from Vulture discovered that the actor barely says any words at all throughout the movie and he only appears in eight short scenes, all of which are under a minute in length.

One major part of the new movie Godzilla vs. Kong is the journey to Hollow Earth and the conspiracy theory is assumed to be true in the Monsterverse.

So, what exactly is the Hollow Earth and is it real?

The rest of this post will contain some minor spoilers from Godzilla vs. Kong, so beware of reading further.

The theory that the Earth is hollow began with 17th-century scientist Edmund Halley, who proposed that the center of the planet is hollow and surrounded by various layers. Modern-day theorists believe that the interior of the Earth has multiple environments and is habituated by exotic and extinct animals.

Part of the theory also includes the belief that a tunnel to Hollow Earth exists at the poles of the planet. In the movie, the Monarch and Apex teams travel to Antarctica to reach the entrance.

Hollow Earth was introduced to the Monsterverse in the movie Kong: Skull Island and we learned in Godzilla: King of the Monsters that Godzilla was using subterranean tunnels to swim across the globe. In Godzilla vs. Kong, we see the journey to the Hollow Earth and get to watch Kong explore the world inside of the earth.

So, is this a real thing?!

Godzilla vs. Kong features an incredible cast of beloved actors and rising stars, but there were actually some exciting stars who were completely cut out of the movie.

Several actors who filmed their roles for the movie were left on the cutting room floor after plot changes were made in the editing room.

This is a common thing that happens in Hollywood and definitely is disappointing for the actors whose work will never be seen. Unfortunately, we won’t be getting a director’s cut as filmmaker Adam Wingard says he’ll never make one.

“This is the ultimate version of the film,” Wingard told GamesRader. “We actually did the least amount of reshoots than any of those MonsterVerse films. Normally, they do about two weeks, but we only did five days. We did have to be quite surgical, as we did change one element of the plot and it affected a couple of scenes at the beginning and a couple of scenes at the end. That’s where my low-budget, no-budget background comes in. You have to be very crafty and able to think in those terms. We were very surgical in those terms. So, no, this is the ultimate version of the film, I would never do a different version of it.”

The new movie Godzilla vs. Kong is out now in theaters, as well as on HBO Max, and we’ve gotta talk about that action-packed ending!

The film opens with Kong on Skull Island, where he is confined to a containment center to shield his whereabouts from Godzilla. It’s believed that if Godzilla knows where to find Kong, that he’ll hunt him down. Unfortunately, Kong is unhappy in containment and clearly wants to get out.

We learn that Apex Cybernetics, a company that was just attacked by Godzilla, is developing a Mechagodzilla in hopes of eliminating the Titans. There are limitations due to the power source and they hatch a plan to travel to the Hollow Earth to harness the power of an energy source there. Kong is recruited to guide the team to the Hollow Earth, but an attack from Godzilla on their way to the entry point almost derails their plans.

After reaching the Hollow Earth, the power source is discovered and Kong figures out that it can recharge an axe made from the spine of a Godzilla species, which becomes his new weapon. The power source’s signature is sent back to the Apex team, who use it to activate Mechagodzilla. At the same time, Godzilla senses the energy and uses his atomic breath to create a hole from earth’s surface all the way to Hollow Earth.
