U.S. Swimmer Gunnar Bentz Apologizes for Rio Gas Station Incident, Tells His Story

Team USA swimmer Gunnar Bentz, 20, has issued an apology for the controversial incident involving the claim that he and teammates Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, and Jack Conger were robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Rio.

It was later found that the U.S. swimmers had reportedly vandalized the gas station.

Gunnar‘s apology was issued to his team, the U.S. Olympic Committee and his former university in a statement posted on the University of Georgia athletics website.

“While I am anxious to put this matter behind me and rejoin my Georgia teammates in classes, practices and competitions, I feel compelled to stress several key points,” Gunnar wrote.

“1. I was never a suspect in the case from the beginning (Brazilian law enforcement officials saw me only as a witness).
2. I never made a false statement to anyone at any time.”

“I also want to be forthright about the details of what transpired last Sunday. What follows is consistent with the account I gave to the Brazilian authorities when I was interviewed for the first and only time on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.”

“After attending an event with several swimmers from different nations, I left in a taxicab along with U.S. swimmers Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte around 6 a.m. On the way back to the Olympic Village, we pulled into a convenience store to use the restroom. There was no restroom inside, so we foolishly relieved ourselves on the backside of the building behind some bushes.”

Team USA Confirms Vandalism, Apologizes to Rio for Swimmers' Actions

The United States Olympic Committee has released a statement to confirm that Team USA’s swimmers did vandalize a gas station in Rio and to apologize for the incident.

“Two U.S. Olympic swimmers (Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger) have given statements to local authorities today regarding the incident first reported on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Their passports have been released and they recently departed Rio,” USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said in a statement. “After providing a statement earlier in the week, a third (James Feigen) provided a revised statement this evening with the hope of securing the release of his passport as soon as possible.”

“Working in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate in Rio, we have coordinated the athletes’ cooperation with local authorities and ensured their safety throughout the process, but we have not seen the full statements provided by Bentz and Conger,” The statement continued. “However, we understand that they describe the events that many have seen on surveillance video made publicly available today. As we understand it, the four athletes (Bentz, Conger, Feigen and Ryan Lochte) left France House early in the morning of August 14 in a taxi headed to the Olympic Village. They stopped at a gas station to use the restroom, where one of the athletes committed an act of vandalism. An argument ensued between the athletes and two armed gas station security staff, who displayed their weapons, ordered the athletes from their vehicle and demanded the athletes provide a monetary payment. Once the security officials received money from the athletes, the athletes were allowed to leave.”

Ryan Lochte Fabricated Rio Robbery Story, Officials Claim

Brazilian police believe that Ryan Lochte fabricated the story about getting robbed at gunpoint last weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The guard was allegedly armed with a pistol, but “never took it out or pointed it at the swimmers.”

U.S. Swimmers Detained at Rio Airport In Connection with Ryan Lochte's Robbery Case

US swimmers Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger are escorted to police headquarters at the Galeo International airport very early Thursday (August 18) in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

The pair were already on their flight, which was set to depart on Wednesday (August 17), but were pulled from the airplane because more information was needed about an armed robbery case they reported.

Gunnar, Jack, and fellow American swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen claimed they were robbed at gunpoint in Rio over the weekend, but police have reportedly found no evidence to back up the story.

A judge ordered that Ryan‘s passport be seized, but he is already back in the United States.

Patrick Sandusky, United States Olympic Committee spokesperson, told People in a statement, “Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were detained Wednesday night shortly before their flight was scheduled to depart from Rio. They were released by local authorities with the understanding that they would continue their discussions about the incident on Thursday.” More Here! »
