Matt Smith Will Play Charles Manson in 'Charlie Says'

Matt Smith will play Charles Manson in an upcoming movie called Charlie Says, directed by Mary Harron.

The upcoming film is based on source material from Ed Sanders‘ 1971 bestseller The Family, as well as The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten by Karlene Faith, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Suki Waterhouse will be joining the cast as well, along with Hannah Murray, Marianne Rendon, Cara Gugino, Kaylie Carter and Merritt Wever.

Charlie Says will focus on the three women who were sentenced to death in Charles Manson’s (Smith) murder case. When the death penalty was lifted, their sentence became life imprisonment. One young graduate student, Karlene Faith (Wever), was sent in to teach them, and through her the film will follow their transformations as they face the reality of their horrific crimes.

The film is set to shoot in Los Angeles this spring.

John Boyega & Will Poulter Defend Being Cast in 'Detroit'!

John Boyega and Will Poulter are defending the decision to cast British stars in their new film Detroit!

In case you didn’t know: Detroit is “based on the true story of one of the most terrifying secrets in American history,” it takes a look at the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of 1967, when three young African American men were murdered at the Algiers Motel.

“When I first read the script it said ‘untitled Kathryn Bigelow project’ and that was enough for me,” John expressed at the London premiere. “You have to trust Kathryn to pick the right cast – none of us were worried about who was from where.”

“I don’t think it is an issue. I just felt very lucky and honoured to have the responsibility of exposing an individual like that and getting the chance to play him unapologetically,” Will added. “In playing Krauss I had the opportunity to expose a real-life character who didn’t just exist in 1967 but unfortunately still operates today. Kathryn and I were keen to expose that fact as unapologetically as possible to draw attention to the greater issue that these individuals don’t have an example made of them enough.”
