Ian plays King Lear in the play, which is being staged at Duke of York’s Theatre.

He was later joined at the after party by Patrick and his wife Sunny Ozell.

Ian recently revealed that this current performance may be his last major Shakespeare role, but that he has no major plans of retiring.

“I’ll keep going as long as the knees keep going. And the mind and the memory are still there. Any day now they can begin to fade and then I’ll perhaps regret that I didn’t do stuff I could have done while I was fit. So being fit, here I am and if I’m not acting, what the hell I going to do sit at home,” he said to AP.

Ian McKellen Celebrates 30th Anniversary of His Coming Out

Ian McKellen publicly came out as a gay man thirty years ago and he is celebrating the anniversary of that special moment.

“I’ve never met a gay person who regretted coming out – including myself. Life at last begins to make sense, when you are open and honest,” the 78-year-old actor wrote on his Twitter account on Saturday (January 27).

“Today is the 30th anniversary of the BBC radio discussion when I publicly said I was gay. So I’m celebrating!” he wrote.

A few years ago, Ian opened up about what made him decide to come out thirty years ago.

“[Back then] there was no equal age of consent [to have sex]. It was 21 for gay people. Nobody worried about the lesbians – they could just get on with it! It was 16 for straight people. Now it’s 16 for everybody. Gays could not serve [openly] in the military. That’s now gone,” Ian told Huffington Post. “There was a very nasty law called Section 28, which inhibited teaching about homosexuality in schools. That’s what got me out. That’s what got me involved. Well, that law is gone. It is now, ironically, illegal to discriminate against gay people in schools – a total reversal of Section 28!”

Ian McKellen Wants to Return as Gandalf in 'Lord of the Rings' TV Series!

A friendly face might be returning to the Lord of the Rings TV series!

Sir Ian McKellen – who played Gandalf in the movies – revealed that he can’t see anyone else playing his role in the upcoming series coming to Amazon.

The 78-year-old actor stopped by Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday morning (December 16) where he was asked how he would feel if someone else played Gandalf.

“What do you mean, another Gandalf?” Ian said. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Back in November, it was announced that a Lord of the Rings series was officially in the works on Amazon – and that it was already confirmed for a multi-season order!
