Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up About His Son's Struggle With Addiction

Robert Downey Jr. is opening up about his 22-year-old son Indio‘s battle with addiction in a new post on his Facebook on Friday (March 11).

The 50-year-old actor wrote a touching note about Indio becoming sober and his dedication to music and his band, The Dose.

“Congrats are in order for my firstborn, and I’m proud to oblige – Having braved the crucible of addiction (and pleased the court), his ongoing commitment to recovery continues to inspire and amaze…,” he wrote.

Robert added, “As long as we can remember, Indio has been a musician at heart. In the last several years, with his band mate Ralph Alexander, I’ve witnessed their dedication, consistency, and determination to grow as artists. I’ve also made it my business to be of as little help as possible, as nepotism usually does more harm than good…Just for today, I’m gonna ease up on that. Trust me and give these fine young men a listen.”

Robert Downey Jr. Discusses Son Indio's Drug Problems, Says It's a Family Problem

Robert Downey Jr. pops out of a window on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s October 2014 issue, on newsstands September 16.

Here is what the 49-year-old The Judge actor had to share with the mag:

On his son Indio’s drug problems: “He’s his mother’s son and my son, and he’s come up the chasm much quicker than we did. But that’s typical in the Information Age; things get accelerated. You’re confronted with histories and predispositions and influences and feelings and unspoken traumas or needs that weren’t met, and all of a sudden you’re three miles into the woods. Can you help someone get out of those woods? Yes, you can. By not getting lost looking for them. Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem.”

On playing Iron Man in the Marvel series: “I’ve gone from being convinced that I am the sole integer in the approbation of a phenomenon to realizing that I was the lead in the first of a series of movies that created a chain reaction that, if everything didn’t fire the way it was supposed to, there’s no operator, no anything. And you go, O.K., life is doing something here that included me but did not require me. But, yes, that role means a lot. Marvel is kind of like this sacred brotherhood.”

Robert, who famously struggled with addiction throughout his life, publicly thanked the Sheriff’s department for their intervention.
