Jason Statham suits up for the European premiere of his new movie, Safe, on Monday (April 30) at BFI IMAX in London, England.

“Doing something different is for great character actors. I don’t see myself as a great character actor,” the 44-year-old actor told the BBC about working on his latest action movie.

Jason also recently shared that he stuck with a diet to take on the role of an ex-cage fighter.

“There’s Christmas, that gets in the way. Other indulgences also get in the way like beer and good food,” he told reporters. “There’s certain times when you get strict and certain times when you’re not so in the priest-like mode. You have to have a balance.”

Synopsis: A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change … until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed.

But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action, and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a “counter.” He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for.

The 44-year-old actor shot scenes in London’s Soho neighborhood.

Jason spoke with the mag about being a former street hustler as a child, selling fake luxury goods to pedestrians.

“It’s people’s own greed that allows them to get ripped off. If your intuition served you at all, you’d never be in that shop or that corner. And we never said, ‘That’s gold, that’s Cartier.’ We just never let them ask,” he said.

On what he thinks about special effects: “F—in’ hate green screen. Pay significant amounts of money never to do it again. You cannot fake adrenaline.”

On drama school: “Not for me.”

On getting acting training from Guy Ritchie: “Guy really went above the call for me. Had me up to the house before I met the producers to read through dialogue. ‘No, you’re doing way too much! The camera picks up more than you think.’ Pointers like that.”

On working – and quitting Johnny Rockets: “I resigned in disgrace from Johnny Rockets after one day. The guy was like, ‘All right, so here’s where the fries are,’ and then this fifties song came on the jukebox and he’s like, ‘Oh, excuse me for a second,’ and ran over to the waiters and busboys and they started singing and doing a little dance. And then he runs back and he’s like, ‘Sorry— every time this song comes on, we all get together and sing!’ And I was like, ‘If you’ll excuse me for a second . . .’ and I left. I was in uniform— a paper hat, the whole thing. Never picked that paycheck up.”

On being a dad – and Aziz Ansari’s co-star: “Aziz always has to fly somewhere really awesome, do stand-up, and then hang out with some kickass people afterwards who’ll all tell him how rad he is. And I’m going to a 4-year- old’s birthday party.”

On his past work: “I’ve done a lot of indies that just kind of disappeared. But I have to say, things usually disappear for a pretty good reason.”
