The stars of Broadway have come together to perform a live rendition of “What The World Needs Now Is Love” on Maya and Marty on Tuesday evening (June 21) following its official release in the wake of the tragic shooting that cost 49 people their lives and countless others injury at Orlando’s Pulse gay nightclub.
A majority of the original contributors – Roger Bart, Charles Busch, Ann Hampton Callaway, Liz Callaway, Len Cariou, Paul Castree, Michael Cerveris, Kevin Chamberlin, Josh Colley, Lilla Crawford, Carmen Cusack, Darius de Haas, Carole Demas, Fran Drescher, Cynthia Erivo, Brian G Gallagher, Victor Garber, Frankie Grande, Joel Grey, Sean Hayes, Megan Hilty, Christopher Scott Icenogle, Bill Irwin, Julie James, Judy Kuhn, Anika Larsen, Liz Larsen, Norm Lewis, Jose Llana, Lorna Luft, Beth Malone, Andrea Martin, Janet Metz, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debra Monk, Jessie Mueller, Lacretta Nicole, Rosie Perez, Billy Porter, BD Wong, Tony Yazbeck – reunited for the special live tribute performance.

The 36-year-old singer wrote the music and lyrics for the new musical and she joined star Jessie Mueller to sing the show’s signature song “She Used to Be Mine.”
The full cast of the musical began the performance with the show’s opening number “Opening Up.” Sadly, the show didn’t pick up any awards during the ceremony.

Also in attendance was the show’s other star Christopher Fitzgerald with his wife Jessica Stone.
Sara is nominated tonight for Best Original Score for writing the music and lyrics while Jessie and Christopher are both nominated for their acting work. Keri will be presenting during the show.
Carole King, who Jessie played in the Broadway musical Beautiful and who Sara sang with at a recent Tony Awards, also hit the red carpet!

Cynthia, who stars in The Color Purple revival, won for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, while Jane, who stars in She Loves Me, won for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.
Other musical theater actors in attendance included She Loves Me cast members Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi, and Nicholas Barasch, Waitress composer and lyricist Sara Bareilles and star of the show Jessie Mueller, Bright Star‘s Carmen Cusack and AJ Shivley, The Color Purple‘s Danielle Brooks, and Broadway stars Khris Davis, Montego Glover and Laura Osnes.

Sara recently opened up about her Tony Awards 2016 Waitress nomination for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.
“Working on Waitress has been a life changing experience personally and professionally,” Sara told Billboard in a statement. “What I have learned from my collaborators on this show and the theater community at large about heart, perseverance, intention, and grace has rewired the way I think about what I put into the world as an artist. Congratulations to all the nominees, as well as all those wonderful shows, actors, singers, dancers and creators who simply make up this truly unique and inspired medium… awards or not. It is truly the highest honor to be sharing this theater season with such outstanding artists. I am very grateful to be here and consider myself a very lucky girl.”
