Ian McKellen has responded to Sam Smith‘s shout-out during his acceptance speech at the 2016 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 28) in Hollywood.

The 23-year-old singer won the award for Best Original Song and said that Ian once mentioned that no openly gay man has won an Oscar before and he’s proud to be the first.

This statement is untrue as Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar back in 2009 for writing the movie Milk and he called the singer out for the mistake.

“I’d said no openly gay actor had received #Oscars – that doesn’t detract from @samsmithworld achievement. Congratulations to him & all others!” Ian said to clarify that he was only speaking of actors.

Rachel McAdams strikes a pose while attending the Vanity Fair & Barneys New York Private Dinner Celebrating ‘Spotlight’ Director Tom McCarthy held at the Chateau Marmont on Wednesday (February 24) in Los Angeles.

The 37-year-old actress was joined at the event by her Spotlight co-stars Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, director-writer Tom McCarthy, Busy Philipps, Donald Glover, Sam Smith and his frequent collaborator Jimmy Napes, and Mark‘s wife Sunrise Coigney.

“I think the heart and power of the story, the real emotion comes from the tales of and the tragedies of these survivors and families of victims,” Tom told ABC News about Spotlight. “And we had the good fortune to sit with some of these men, specifically depicted in the movie, Phil Saviano and Joe Crowley, and hear their stories. It’s incredibly powerful. And I think as we started to do that, we not only felt that we had something important on our hands, but we also felt a great deal of responsibility to tell the story and to tell it right.”
