Simon Pegg 'Respectfully' Disagrees With George Takei Calling Gay Sulu 'Unfortunate'

Simon Pegg has responded to George Takei‘s criticizing comments about the decision to make his old character Sulu – now played by John Cho – openly gay in the new movie Star Trek Beyond.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character,” George expressed. “Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene‘s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

“I have huge love and respect for George Takei, his heart, courage and humor are an inspiration,” Simon, who stars as Scotty and also co-wrote the latest addition, wrote in a statement (via THR). “However, with regards to his thoughts on our Sulu, I must respectfully disagree with him.”

“He’s right, it is unfortunate, it’s unfortunate that the screen version of the most inclusive, tolerant universe in science fiction hasn’t featured an LGBT character until now,” Simon added. “We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ‘gay character’, rather than simply for who they are, and isn’t that tokenism? I like this idea because it suggests that in a hypothetical multiverse, across an infinite matrix of alternate realities, we are all LGBT somewhere. Whatever dimension we inhabit, we all just want to be loved by those we love (and I love George Takei). I can’t speak for every reality but that must surely true of this one. Live long and prosper.”

Sulu is Gay in 'Star Trek Beyond,' George Takei Calls it 'Unfortunate'

George Takei has reacted to the news that his classic character Sulu is revealed to be gay in the new movie Star Trek Beyond.

John Cho plays the role in the current film franchise and he said the character development is a nod to Takei, who is openly gay in real life.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out of it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” John told the Herald Sun.

While most people seem to be excited over the first openly gay character in the franchise, George has called it “unfortunate” as it was not part of creator Gene Roddenerry‘s original vision.

“He was a strong supporter of LGBT equality,” George told THR. “But he said he has been pushing the envelope and walking a very tight rope — and if he pushed too hard, the show would not be on the air.”

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character,” he added. “Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

'Selfie' Canceled by ABC, 'Forever' Gets Full Season Order

Selfie has been canceled by ABC after five weeks on the air, according to Deadline.

The new comedy series, which starred Karen Gillan and John Cho, received a ton of bad buzz leading up to its launch because of the social media related title. After its Tuesday night sibling Manhattan Love Story was canceled, two episodes of the series were aired back to back last week.

Selfie will air this coming Tuesday, but its scheduling after that is currently unknown.

In some better news at ABC, the network has given a full-season order to the supernatural crime procedural Forever, which stars Ioan Gruffudd as an immortal medical examiner.
