Julia Michaels Fires Back at Haters Criticizing Her Jumping & Smiling at Chester Bennington Tribute

Julia Michaels is firing back at haters who had a problem with the way she acted at the late Chester Bennington‘s tribute concert this weekend.

“I refused to look bored and solemn for someone that wasn’t either of those things,” Julia tweeted. “I was there to help celebrate his life and his art and everything he’s accomplished and all the lives he’s changed. Not to mourn him.”

“Just an FYI to all the people that wrote horrible things about me jumping and smiling during the chester Bennington tribute,” she continued. “And also, people are so F*cking mean. So unnecessarily mean. Whoever hurt you, I’m sorry.”

Julia took the stage with Kiiara to sing “Heavy,” a song she co-wrote with the band, and was seen jumping and smiling during the performance.

Bebe Rexha also came to Julia‘s defense, tweeting, “Julia, unfortunately this world is filled with love and hate. Hate is confused love. You’re amazing keep your head up. Xoxo @imjmichaels.”

During the interview, Julia revealed why she didn’t keep Justin Bieber‘s smash hit “Sorry” – which she co-penned – for herself.

“It just wasn’t my time,” Julia explained.

“I’m a very nervous person and I’ve never really been much of a confident person, and it took a song like ‘Issues’ for me to realize that it was something that I wanted and something that I suppressed because I’m so fearful of it.”

Julia Michaels, Khalid, & SZA Star in Billboard's Grammys Preview

Julia Michaels, Khalid, and SZA pose for the cover of Billboard‘s latest issue, which offers a preview at what we can expect at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

All three of the artists are safe bets for the Best New Artist category and there’s a good chance they might get nominations in other categories as well.

The three singers revealed who they’d take to the Grammys if they’re nominated:

SZA: “My mom and my nana, who both narrate my album. My granny is scared of flying. She said she would fly if I had a baby or got married. And the Grammys is like having a baby, so…”

Julia Michaels: “I’m going to bring my manager, Beka Tischker, with me. I couldn’t do this without her.”

Khalid: “I’d bring my best friend Carlos and my mom. After my dad passed away [when I was 7], my mom became my rock. She’s the one who inspired me — she sings as well. So when I sing, I’m like a mirror image of her. If the nomination comes, I want her to see the hard work that she [fostered in] my brain.”
