Perry Mason is coming back.
HBO is renewing the drama series for a second season, THR confirmed on Wednesday (July 22).

“It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason. Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season,” said HBO’s Francesca Orsi in a statement.
The show was originally pitched as a feature film for Robert Downey Jr.
If you haven’t watched yet, the show “is based on the character from the Erle Stanley Gardner novels — though it takes place before Mason becomes the defense attorney made familiar by the 1957-66 CBS series. In this Los Angeles noir version, Mason is a low-rent private investigator haunted by his wartime experience in France and suffering from a broken marriage.”
The series stars Matthew Rhys as Mason, with Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Tatiana Maslany and John Lithgow also on the cast.
Katie Holmes hits the red carpet at the premiere of her new movie Days and Nights on Thursday evening (September 25) at the IFC Center in New York City.
The indie film was written and directed by theater actor Christian Camargo, who also stars alongside Katie, Juliet Rylance, and Cherry Jones.
Other celebs in attendance at the event that night included The Knick‘s Eve Hewson, Sting, Mickey Sumner, and Broadway star Condola Rashad.
The movie is inspired by Anton Chekhov‘s classic story “The Seagull.” It follows the reckless desire that wreaks havoc over Memorial Day weekend as a family confronts the volatile and fragile nature of love. Check it out in limited theaters this weekend!

Ethan recently revealed he finds it boring portraying perfect characters in his films.
“Playing people who are perfect is a real bore. It really is. What I liked about Ellison was that he’s well-meaning in some ways, but in other ways he’s not,” Ethan expressed about his character in Sinister. “He’s horribly ambitious and claims to be doing it all for his family, but really he’s doing it for himself and his own ambition. I find those kinds of people much more interesting to play because, first of all, you don’t know what they’re going to do next because their motives are all over the place, and yet you have to try to give them some humanity so that audiences care about them regardless of their motives.”

Katie Holmes is set to star in a modern retelling of The Seagull, the classic play by Anton Chekhov.
The 33-year-old actress will star alongside Allison Janney, William Hurt, Juliet Rylance, Mark Rylance, and Jean Reno. The film will be written and directed by Dexter actor Christian Carmago.
The film will be “set in rural New England where reckless desire wreaks havoc over Memorial Day weekend as a family confronts the volatile and fragile nature of love.”
Allison will play Elizabeth, a movie star based on the role of Irina Arkadina in The Seagull, while William will play her ailing brother. Katie is going to play the temperamental daughter of the estate’s caretaker, according to Variety.
Juliet, who is married to Christian in real life, will also produce the flick.
