Katherine Heigl Says She Doesn't Go By 'Katherine' in Her Personal Life, Prefers This Name Instead

Katherine Heigl has revealed that actually prefers being called a different name!

While promoting her popular new Netflix series Firefly Lane, the 42-year-old actress explained that she doesn’t go by “Katherine” in her personal life.

“No one calls me Katherine. It sounds much more sophisticated right? Like an adult named Katherine,” Katherine shared on The Drew Barrymore Show. “It helps me separate my work from me if that makes sense. I just had to embrace it.”

Katherine and Drew started talking about Katherine‘s name when Drew mentioned her friend Katie – and compared it to how this Oscar-winning actress recently revealed that she prefers being called by a different name.

“I think Katherine is so regal… and then Katie is like super cute and smiley,” Drew said. “Do you feel like you have those two women running around inside you?”

“I do. I do feel that way,” Katherine responded. “I feel like I can present as Katherine when I need to but most of the time I am just Katie.”

During another recent interview, Katherine Heigl reflected on her decision to leave Grey’s Anatomy.

'Firefly Lane' Book Reveals Why Tully & Kate End Their Friendship (Spoilers)

SPOILER ALERT – Do not continue reading this post if you haven’t finished Firefly Lane, unless you don’t mind spoilers!

The new series Firefly Lane has been number one on Netflix since its debut a few days ago and the first season ends with a burning question: what happened with Tully and Kate, and why aren’t they friends any longer?

The show jumped around the timeline throughout the entire season and some scenes hinted that Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) aren’t friends in the future. We finally learned in the final moments of the season finale that Kate never wants to see Tully again.

“No one wants you here,” Kate told Tully at her dad’s funeral. “When I said I could never forgive you for what you did, what did you think that meant?”

So, what happened between them? We won’t find out until season two, but if you read the book, you already know what happened.

'Firefly Lane' Timeline - What Years Do the Show Take Place In?

Firefly Lane is currently number one on the Netflix charts in the U.S. and everyone is talking about the new series, which stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke.

The series is based on the best-selling book, which was published in 2008, and tells “the sweeping story of two inseparable best friends and their enduring, complicated bond, spanning four tumultuous decades.”

The show goes back and forth throughout three different time periods to show Tully and Kate’s relationship throughout the years.

The timeline might confuse some viewers because the present day period does not take place in our current day and the show isn’t always super clear about the years.

Katherine Heigl Explains Why She Changed Her Hair Color for 'Firefly Lane' Series

Katherine Heigl is opening up about going brunette for her new series Firefly Lane, which is streaming now on Netflix!

The 42-year-old former Grey’s Anatomy actress appeared on The Talk on Thursday (February 4) to talk about the new show.

“I just think this story is so beautiful, powerful, relatable and I haven’t had the opportunity to tell this kind of story [in] a long time. I just love and really respond to those really human, kind of relatable, heartwarming stories,” Katherine said. “I’m really proud how it turned out and I’m so proud of [co-star] Sarah Chalke, everyone involved in it.”

Katherine said she wanted to honor the source material, so she changed her hair color.

“In the book, Tully is a brunette so I love to honor the book as much as possible and I love changing my hair color…and that is very confusing for my children,” Katherine said. “My son, especially, who at the time was two, when I did it was just mind-blown. He didn’t even know who I was. Actually, I think he really loved the brunette. He’d kind of be like [face blushing], then I went back to blonde during the pandemic and he kept coming back to me like, ‘Where’s your brown hair?’”

Katherine recently reflected on leaving Grey’s Anatomy and what she regrets not doing sooner.

Katherine Heigl Reflects on Leaving 'Grey's Anatomy' & What She Regrets Not Doing Sooner

Katherine Heigl is looking back.

The 42-year-old actress reflected on leaving Grey’s Anatomy in 2010 in an interview with People.

“I don’t think you get through life without any regrets, but you can create some purpose from it,” she said while reflecting on her career as a whole.

Following her 2007 Emmy win, she withdrew her name from contention for a repeat nomination, saying she “did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant” a nomination, which led to a reputation for being “difficult” in Hollywood amid other incidents.

“I know there’s a better way to deal with those things than I did. I could have handled it with more grace,” she said.

“I don’t actually regret leaving Grey’s Anatomy — I did the right thing for me and for my family — but I do regret the heightened drama I was feeling at that time. If I’d known anything about meditation then, or had been talking to a therapist or someone to help me through some of the fear that I was steeped in, I think I would have been more calm in how I approached what boundaries I needed to create to thrive,” she continued.

“I certainly regret not learning earlier how to manage my anxiety better. Living at that heightened level of anxiety…created a defensiveness in me and wariness and assuming that people were against me. I let my mind run rampant without the tools to properly manage that,” she went on to say.

“The last five years has been really about learning how to manage that anxiety and to control my own thoughts. I learned that not managing stress leads to not dealing with negativity or frustration or disappointment in the proper way.”

She also further reflected on being labeled “difficult.”

Katherine Heigl Reflects on Being Labeled 'Difficult,' James Marsden Defends Her

Katherine Heigl is looking back on the days when she was labeled as a “difficult” actress to work with in Hollywood.

The label was created after the actress called her 2007 movie Knocked Up “a little sexist,” then decided not to submit herself for the 2008 Emmys because she felt her material on Grey’s Anatomy didn’t warrant a nomination, and then complained in 2009 about her 17-hour workdays on the medical drama series.

“I may have said a couple of things you didn’t like, but then that escalated to ‘she’s ungrateful,’ then that escalated to ‘she’s difficult,’ and that escalated to ‘she’s unprofessional,’” Katherine said in a Washington Post interview. “What is your definition of difficult? Somebody with an opinion that you don’t like? Now, I’m 42, and that s— pisses me off.”

“At the time, I was just quickly told to shut the f— up. The more I said I was sorry, the more they wanted it,” she added. “The more terrified and scared I was of doing something wrong, the more I came across like I had really done something horribly wrong.”
