Kerry Washington Opens Up About Second Pregnancy for 'InStyle' September 2016 Cover Story

Kerry Washington looks stunning on the September 2016 cover of InStyle‘s Fall Fashion issue, on newsstands on Friday, August 12.

Here’s what the 39-year-old Scandal star had to share with the mag:

On preparing for her second child: I’ve really leaned heavily on my boss’s experience. I consider myself busy, but [Scandal creator and writer] Shonda [Rhimes] has about four of five shows, three kids… She says, ‘If you feel like you have just the right amount of help, then you don’t have enough.’ My therapist said this too. You need a lot of support. No just logistically but emotionally and spiritually.”

On the prospect of positive change: “I choose to feel optimistic, because I don’t that I could get out of bed if I didn’t. The key will be when we stop allowing our otherness to separate us. Whether it’s immigrant’s rights, women’s rights, civil rights, or LGBT rights, we’re all under attack, because none of us belongs to that small group who have held power for a very long time.”

On her achievements and what’s next: “I think that’s where the need for quiet is coming from. You arrive at a certain place of achieving and suddenly you feel like your goals are being dictated by other people…Right now, as I get ready for this second baby, it’s really about me being in touch with what I want. I didn’t get here because I was trying to be what somebody else wanted me to be… I am not interested in playing by other people’s rules. So for now, I’m leaving myself open to the adventure.”

Kerry Washington on Recent Violence: My Life Matters, Your Life Matters

Kerry Washington is encouraging her fans to stand up against the violence around the world and declare that our lives matter.

“There are no words that can encapsulate the pain of our bleeding hearts,” the 39-year-old Scandal actress wrote in an open letter on her Instagram account.

“Today, again, I am called to put my hand on my heart and affirm that: I matter. MY life matters. As a human, my life matters. As a woman, my life matters. As a Black person, my life matters. My life matters. And yours does too. Whoever you are,” Kerry added. “As you read this, as you tread through whatever pain you are traversing, know that no matter how much sickness lives in the hearts of those who are afraid of your humanity, YOUR LIFE MATTERS. We must stand up and have the courage and the freedom to say: I matter. And then we must have hearts big enough to say that YOU matter too. Our differences do not give us the right to devalue the worth of another human being.”

“The violence must stop. We must do better,” Kerry concluded. “I pray today for the healing of our hearts and the healing of our society.”

Kerry Washington on Orlando Shooting: 'It's Inexcusable'

Kerry Washington cradles her baby bump while walking the green carpet at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s 2016 L.A. Golf Classic Fundraiser on Monday afternoon (June 13) in Burbank, Calif.

Also in attendance at the event were actors Dave Annable and Joe Mantegna.

Kerry opened up to Extra at the fundraiser about the Orlando shooting.

“It’s so devastating what happened in Orlando, and I just wonder what it’s going to take for us to create some real reform around gun control in this country,” Kerry said. “My heart just goes out to the LGBT community, it’s not okay for there to be such acts of hate, it’s inexcusable… It’s also scary to me that you can put somebody on a no-fly list, but that same person can walk into a store and buy a gun.”

FYI: Kerry is wearing a Giambattisa Valli dress, SJP Collection shoes, and Anita Ko jewelry.

Lady Gaga & Kerry Washington Take on Variety's 'Actors on Actors' Covers

Lady Gaga, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kerry Washington, and Aziz Ansari take the cover of two separate Actors on Actors Variety covers

Here’s what they shared…

Lady Gaga, on being herself: “I guess the thing is, what I am as Gaga really is what other people think Gaga is. It’s not necessarily what I am. Gaga is this stronger individual part of myself that I discovered being young in New York — loving music, meeting with young artists, working with musicians, with writers, studying the scene, and being involved in the lifestyle.”

Kerry, on producing and acting: “There was that point where it was like, OK, now I’m avoiding the difficult, painful acting of being Anita Hill by going over the schedule with the line producer. I have to now take off the producing hat and focus on going to that place that she was in. It was scarier than I thought it was going to be, but exciting also to learn how to take that hat on and off as a producer and actor.”
