The cast of the Tony-nominated musical Jagged Little Pill is at the 2020 Tony Awards!

Celia Rose Gooding received support from her Tony-winning mom LaChanze at the event on Sunday (September 26) at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City.

The 21-year-old actress, who has left the show to star in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, was nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.

Celia‘s co-stars Lauren Patten and Kathryn Gallagher were also nominated in the category with Lauren taking home the award.

Also in attendance at the awards show were the show’s stars Elizabeth Stanley, who is up for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Sean Allan Krill and Derek Klena, who were nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

Lauren Patten picked up her first Tony Award amid the controversy surrounding her role in the musical Jagged Little Pill.

The 29-year-old actress won for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical at the 2020 Tony Awards on Sunday (September 26) at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City.

The producers of the musical recently acknowledged missteps in how they publicly spoke about and identified Lauren‘s character Jo. The character was played as a non-binary person during the show’s pre-Broadway run in Boston in 2018. When the show moved to New York City the next year, all the references to the character being non-binary were removed. Lauren also stopped referring to Jo as “they” or “them” and started using “she” or “her” to describe the character, according to Deadline.

Lauren acknowledged her non-binary and trans colleagues in her acceptance speech.

The producers of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill are apologizing in a formal statement for the erasure of a non-binary character.

The character Jo, played by Tony nominee Lauren Patten, was played as a non-binary person during the show’s pre-Broadway run in Boston in 2018. When the show moved to New York City the next year, all the references to the character being non-binary were removed.

Lauren also stopped referring to Jo as “they” or “them” and started using “she” or “her” to describe the character, according to Deadline.

Now, both the show’s producers and Lauren are speaking out to apologize for the erasure of the non-binary character. The producers have also made a pledge to rewrite the character and make sure an inclusive casting process is held in the future.

“We should have protected and celebrated the fact that the non-binary audience members saw in Jo a bold, defiant, complex, and vibrant representation of their community. For all of this we are deeply sorry,” the producers said.

The cast of Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill won a Grammy Award today and they had such a great reaction to the news!

The show won the award for Best Musical Theater Album, beating out the cast recordings for Amelie, American Utopia on Broadway, Little Shop of Horrors, The Prince of Egypt, and Soft Power.

Four of the show’s leads are credited as principal soloists on the album and will receive Grammy trophies: Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding, Lauren Patten, and Elizabeth Stanley. All four of them are also nominated for Tony Awards for their work in the show!

Kathryn, Lauren, and Elizabeth safely gathered together after completing COVID-19 tests so that they could watch the Premiere Ceremony together… in matching dresses!

“I made Grammy gowns for our first Grammys and so far it’s gone well ✨,” Kathryn wrote on Instagram.

Kathryn is getting rave reviews for her performance as Bella, who is a victim of date-rape and performs Alanis Morissette‘s brand new song “Predator.”

The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Mashable all noted that Kathryn‘s work in the musical is “heartbreaking” while Variety says that she is “giving a helluva performance.”

The Daily Beast says that Kathryn is “excellent in a truly tough part,” Broadway News notes that she is “extraordinarily fine in depicting her character’s confusion and shame,” and Deadline writes that Kathryn is “worth singling out in a universally strong cast.”

Atlantic Records has dropped the closing number, “You Learn,” which features the full cast, including Elizabeth Stanley, Sean Allan Krill, Celia Rose Gooding, Derek Klena, Kathryn Gallagher, and Lauren Patten.

Jagged Little Pill is the new musical featuring the classic songs of Alanis Morissette, as well as some original music she wrote just for the show.

Atlantic Records will be releasing the Original Broadway Cast Recording and for the first time in Broadway history, the musical and label are joining forces in offering a special ticket-and-album bundle for fans – ticket purchases for select performances will be accompanied by a digital download of the album.
