Luis Fonsi Says 'Despacito' Follow-Up Is 'Really Special' Collaboration!

Luis Fonsi‘s “Despacito,” the biggest Spanish-language hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since “Macarena,” is just two weeks shy of tying the record for the all-time longest running #1 hit: “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men – but what’s set to come after it?

“[We've got something] really special planned. We just confirmed [it]…yesterday!” the 39-year-old singer told ABC Radio ahead of his appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday (August 16) in New York City. “And it hasn’t been recorded, so I’m a firm believer of, until it’s done, let’s not over-celebrate it. But I’m really excited, ’cause it’s a really cool collaboration, and it’s an amazing song.”

“[It] finally got to No. 1 and it’s been there for 14 weeks and it’s just a blessing,” Luis said on GMA. “It’s been a huge surprise…I’m just so honored that the world has connected to the song, a Spanish song, to see all of these beautiful countries singing in Spanish.”

'Despacito' (Sans Justin Bieber) Breaks YouTube Record for Most Viewed Video

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s music video for “Despacito” is now the most watched video of all time on YouTube and it will likely become the first video to reach three million views!

The video, which is not the remix version featuring Justin Bieber, has 2,994,561,023 views at the time of publishing.

“Despacito” takes the record from Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa‘s Fast & Furious 6 song “See You Again,” which broke the record back in mid-July.

It’s impressive that “Despacito” has hit the record this quickly as the video was released in January 2017 while “See You Again” is already two years old.

'Despacito' Collaborator Luis Fonsi Defends Justin Bieber for Not Singing the Song in Concert

Justin Bieber‘s “Despacito” collaborator is coming to his defense for not performing the song in concert.

Luis Fonsi is supporting the 23-year-old singer for deciding not to sing the song live after Justin recently told concert goers that he doesn’t know the lyrics to the song and would rather not perform it – and fans were not happy.

“I don’t blame him not knowing [the lyrics], and I think we have to give him a little bit of a pass because that’s not his main language,” Luis said on ABC News Radio. “We can’t expect the guy to just out of the blue get it perfectly.”

On “Despacito,” Justin sings in Spanish – which Luis says was his first time singing in a different language.

“He had the lyrics in front of him,” Luis said about when they recorded the song. “He had a chance to record the chorus in English. We had a full English lyric, and he decided to take the time to record it in Spanish because he wanted to keep the originality of the song.”

Luis continued: “So I actually applaud the fact that he took the time in the recording studio to do it and he did a good job.”

Justin Bieber Came Up With the 'Despacito (Remix)' Idea

Did you know that the hit song “Despacito (Remix)” was Justin Bieber‘s idea?

The 23-year-old singer was the one who contacted Luis Fonsi to put together the remake of the track, featuring Daddy Yankee.

It’s a good thing, too, because it was an instant success! In fact, it’s the first Spanish-language song to make it into the top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 list in 20 years.

“The reality is that the song, thank God, is already a global hit,” Luis told Yahoo. “What Justin Bieber does now is take it to an Anglo-Saxon market. He was the one who initiated it. He was on tour in Colombia when he heard the song in a club. He saw how people reacted and told his manager he wanted to record the song.”

“[Justin] recorded it and decided to sing in Spanish on his own, and I think it’s incredible,” Luis added.
