Luis Fonsi Says Justin Bieber Was the One Who Decided to Sing in Spanish on 'Despacito'!

Luis Fonsi looks handsome on the cover of #legend, out now.

Here’s what the 39-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter had to say:

On the success of “Despacito”: “With all the new platforms for people to find music and streaming services, fans are exposed to all kinds of music. And I think, with that available, it’s all so much more accessible. This is something that’s great for every genre, not just Latin music. Now we can pick and choose what we want to hear and make our playlists.”

On Hurricane Maria:
“You know, it’s a lot of mixed emotions for me. I’m on this tour, I had a concert yesterday and a concert today and I have one tomorrow. My first day off is October 2, and instead of flying to see my family, I’m flying straight to Puerto Rico to see how I can help.”

On Justin Bieber singing in Spanish: “The funny thing is we actually have a version of the song fully recorded in English, and he knew that. Instead of using that, he decided to use the Spanish version, even though he doesn’t speak Spanish himself and made sure he was phonetically pronouncing the words correctly.”

Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber's 'Despacito' Officially Ties With Mariah Carey for Longest No. 1 Run

Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber are officially tied with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men!

After 16 consecutive weeks, “Despacito” is now officially tied with Mariah and Boyz II Men‘s “One Sweet Day” for longest No. 1 run in Billboard Hot 100 chart history, Billboard reports.

Mariah originally set the record between 1995 and 1996, holding the record for over two decades.

Along with the Hot 100 record, the “Despacito” video (sans Justin) recently became the most-watched music video of all time on YouTube. As of now, the clip has over 3.4 billion views.

The question remains: will “Despacito” beat Mariah‘s record next week?

Luis Fonsi Says 'Despacito' Follow-Up Is 'Really Special' Collaboration!

Luis Fonsi‘s “Despacito,” the biggest Spanish-language hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since “Macarena,” is just two weeks shy of tying the record for the all-time longest running #1 hit: “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men – but what’s set to come after it?

“[We've got something] really special planned. We just confirmed [it]…yesterday!” the 39-year-old singer told ABC Radio ahead of his appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday (August 16) in New York City. “And it hasn’t been recorded, so I’m a firm believer of, until it’s done, let’s not over-celebrate it. But I’m really excited, ’cause it’s a really cool collaboration, and it’s an amazing song.”

“[It] finally got to No. 1 and it’s been there for 14 weeks and it’s just a blessing,” Luis said on GMA. “It’s been a huge surprise…I’m just so honored that the world has connected to the song, a Spanish song, to see all of these beautiful countries singing in Spanish.”

'Despacito' (Sans Justin Bieber) Breaks YouTube Record for Most Viewed Video

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s music video for “Despacito” is now the most watched video of all time on YouTube and it will likely become the first video to reach three million views!

The video, which is not the remix version featuring Justin Bieber, has 2,994,561,023 views at the time of publishing.

“Despacito” takes the record from Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa‘s Fast & Furious 6 song “See You Again,” which broke the record back in mid-July.

It’s impressive that “Despacito” has hit the record this quickly as the video was released in January 2017 while “See You Again” is already two years old.
