Macklemore on 'White Privilege' Iggy Azalea Diss: 'I Should Have Let Her Know'

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis take the cover of Billboard‘s latest issue.

Here’s what Macklemore had to share with the mag:

On his sobriety: “If it wasn’t for sobriety, we would not be -talking right now. There would be no Unruly Mess to discuss. There just wouldn’t be any music.”

On dissing Iggy Azalea in “White Privilege”: There’s enough of a relationship that I should have let her know beforehand. And I didn’t do that…I haven’t talked to her.”

On media criticism when he talks about race: “When you mess up publicly it can be difficult to get vulnerable again or to put yourself out there.”

Macklemore Explains Why He Called Out Iggy Azalea & Miley Cyrus in 'White Privilege II'

Macklemore is now explaining why he called out Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea in his new song “White Privilege II” for appropriating black culture.

“For me, that second verse is unpacking. It’s an unpacking moment of internalized criticism and self-doubt, and ‘What have I done,’ and letting the criticism infiltrate who I am. ‘Why am I insecure at a protest?’ And I think that people get put into boxes, and the conversation around cultural appropriation – I was at the forefront of that, rightfully so. And that conversation also included Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea, and that’s why their names are on the record,” the 32-year-old rapper told Rolling Stone.

“So if I’m put on blast, critiqued, broken down, questioned – all those things will happen, and they are completely valid. That’s part of the design of the conversation. If there’s a bigger teachable moment through this record, at the expense of me potentially being like, ‘Oh, I should have said this,’ or ‘I shouldn’t have said this,’ or ‘I see where that criticism is coming from,’ that’s OK,” he added.

Iggy responded to the diss shortly after his song hit the web.

Macklemore Calls Out Iggy Azalea on 'White Privilege,' She Responds to Diss

Macklemore just released a new song called “White Privilege II” in which he disses Iggy Azalea and Miley Cyrus for appropriating black culture, and now the rapper is responding.

“You’ve exploited and stolen the music, the moment,” Macklmore raps on the new song. “The magic, the passion, the fashion, you toy with / The culture was never yours to make better.”

“You’re Miley, you’re Elvis, you’re Iggy Azalea. Fake and so plastic, you’ve heisted the magic/ You’ve taken the drums and the accent you rapped in/ You’re branded ‘hip-hop,’ it’s so fascist and backwards,” he continues.

Iggy took to her Twitter account to respond to a fan who asked if she had heard the song.

“he shouldnt have spent the last 3 yrs having friendly convos and taking pictures together at events etc if those were his feelings,” Iggy said.
