Disney's Live Action Remakes Ranked Based on Their International Box Office Earnings (& 4 Movies Grossed More Than $1 Billion!)

Disney’s live action movies are huge money makers!

From the ’90s to today, Disney has released 17 live action movies, and there are so many more on the way.

The latest is The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey. According to Deadline, the movie brought in $117.5 million domestically and $163.8 million globally in its opening weekend.

The movie’s box office was at the center of some controversy ahead of its premiere. Why? Aladdin star Mena Massoud made some comments comparing the unreleased movie to the one he starred in.

In particular, he implied that The Little Mermaid wouldn’t make more than $1 billion at the global box office like Aladdin did.

That got us wondering if Aladdin was the top-earning live action movie at Disney. We did some digging and compared how much money each movie brought in internationally. You might be surprised to learn that four of the movies have grossed over one billion dollars. But does Aladdin come out on top?

'Maleficent' Sequel Opens Below Box Office Expectations, 'Zombieland 2' Off to Strong Start

Angelina Jolie‘s new movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is now in theaters and the film opened at number one, though below box office expectations.

The movie earned $36 million in North America during its first weekend, which is just half of what the first Maleficent movie made in its opening. Box office experts had previously predicted that the movie would open with about $45 million for the first weekend.

Coming in second place this weekend was Joker in its third weekend with an additional $29.2 million for a total of $247 million so far.

Zombieland: Double Tap opened with a strong $26.725 million for its first weekend for a third place finish, which is just about on par with the first film’s opening.

Opening in limited release this weekend were Robert Pattinson‘s The Lighthouse and Taika Waititi‘s Jojo Rabbit, which both had strong openings.

'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' Opening Weekend Box Office Numbers Revealed!

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is on top at the box office!

The Maleficent follow-up, which co-stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer, brought in about $38 million in its opening weekend, according to THR on Sunday (October 19).

Although the movie was expected to have a larger debut, it’s still the top film at the box office for the weekend. The original film debuted at $69.4 million, and eventually brought in $758 million globally.

Joker brought in $28 million in its third weekend, while Zombieland 2: Double Tap opened to approximately $26 million, ahead of the 2009 film.

Hustlers also pushed past the $100 million mark as of this weekend.

Angelina Jolie's 'Maleficent' Sequel Is On Track to Top 'Joker' at the Box Office

Angelina Jolie‘s new movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is hitting theaters this weekend and experts predict that it will top the box office!

The movie is on track to open with about $45 million for its first weekend, according to Variety.

The first Maleficent earned $69 million in its opening weekend back in 2014 and it went on to gross $750 worldwide.

Competing for second place will be Joker in its third weekend and the new movie Zombieland: Double Tap, which are both on track to make somewhere between $20 million and $30 million.

Angelina Jolie & Michelle Pfeiffer Join 'Maleficent' Cast for Global Press Conference
