Mario Batali to Be Arraigned on Indecent Assault & Battery Charge

Mario Batali is expected to be arraigned on an indecent assault and battery charge on Friday (May 24) in Boston, Mass.

A spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the news on Wednesday (May 22) in a statement to NBC Boston.

The incident involving the 58-year-old celebrity chef reportedly occurred at a restaurant in the Back Bay area on March 31, 2017.

In a criminal complaint, a woman told police she saw Mario and tried to take a selfie over her shoulder at the restaurant. He apparently noticed, called her over, grabbed her chest and kissed her without consent and invited her to his hotel room according to a Boston Globe report.

A woman in Massachusetts filed a lawsuit back in August of 2018 with similar allegations at the same restaurant. It’s not yet known if the reported criminal complaint and civil suit involved the same person and incident.

Mr. Batali denies the allegations in both this criminal complaint and the civil complaint filed last August. The charges, brought by the same individual without any new basis, are without merit. He intends to fight the allegations vigorously, and we expect the outcome to fully vindicate Mr. Batali,” said his attorney Anthony Fuller in a statement.

He could face two and a half years in prison if convicted.

Mario was fired from The Chew in December of 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

“Much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted. That behavior was wrong, and there are no excuses,” he said at the time.

Mario Batali Apologizes for Past Behavior, Shares New Recipe at Same Time

Mario Batali is being criticized for the way he addressed his followers amid allegations of sexual harassment.

The 57-year-old celebrity chef, who was just fired from ABC’s The Chew and suspended from his restaurant empire, apologized to fans for his “past behavior.” But at the same time, he also shared a new recipe.

“As many of you know, this week there has been some news coverage about some of my past behavior,” Batali wrote in the email. “I have made many mistakes and I am so very sorry that I have disappointed my friends, my family, my fans and my team. My behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility.”

“Sharing the joys of Italian food, tradition and hospitality with all of you, each week, is an honor and privilege. Without the support of all of you – my fans – I would never have a forum in which to expound on this. I will work every day to regain your respect and trust,” he added.

After signing off, Mario added, “p.s. in case you’re searching for a holiday-inspired breakfast, these Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls are a fan favorite.”

Mario Batali Fired From 'The Chew' Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Mario Batali is no longer a co-host of ABC’s The Chew.

After being asked to leave the show during an investigation, the 57-year-old celebrity chef has now been fired in the wake of sexual harassment and assault allegations.

“Upon completing its review into the allegations made against Mario Batali, ABC has terminated its relationship with him and he will no longer appear on The Chew. While we remain unaware of any type of inappropriate behavior involving him and anyone affiliated with our show, ABC takes matters like this very seriously as we are committed to a safe work environment and his past behavior violates our standards of conduct,” the network confirmed on Friday (December 15).

Mario has been accused by eight women, with claims ranging from unwanted sexual advances to groping.

“Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted. That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses,” Mario said in a statement earlier in the week.

Mario Batali has been accused of sexual harassment by four women.

The celebrity chef and co-host of ABC’s The Chew has been asked to leave the show while an investigation takes place.

The Eater published an expose detailing the allegations, which include two decades of “inappropriate touching.”
