Matt Lauer's Ex-Wife Speaks Out in His Defense After 'Today Show' Firing

Matt Lauer‘s ex-wife Nancy Alspaugh is speaking out to defend him after he was fired from The Today Show amid sexual misconduct allegations.

Nancy was married to Matt from 1981 to 1988 and she is surprised by the news.

“I was shocked because he’s been such a stalwart at that network and in that job,” Alspaugh told Entertainment Tonight. “He’s been the best person that’s ever held that job and I couldn’t imagine that anything that he would have done — that would have been so out of character for him — that would have caused that reaction.”

“I never saw him as a power monger or somebody who would abuse his position in any way,” Nancy added, saying that Matt is an “incredibly nice, incredibly charming person.”

Nancy questions if some of the accusations facing Matt are true or not.

“He’s just a very giving person and charming and I think a lot of this stuff is obviously going to come to light, whether it’s true or not, and some of the things that are being stated may not be true,” she said. “We have to find that out, you know? As time goes on here, people should be aware there’s a family involved here. There are three children and that’s — I think it’s important to be aware that this can destroy a family. Reporting on accusations before they know whether they’re real or not.”

Matt spoke out on Thursday morning to apologize for his behavior and also say that some of the claims are untrue.

Matt Lauer Issues Apology for Sexual Misconduct, Says Some Claims Are 'Untrue'

Matt Lauer was fired by NBC and the Today show after allegations of sexual misconduct, and now, he’s speaking out.

“There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” the 59-year-old former TV personality said in a statement, read on air by his former co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb.

“I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace,” Lauer‘s statement concluded.

Jimmy Kimmel Addresses Matt Lauer & Garrison Keillor Sexual Harassment Allegations

Matt Lauer and Garrison Keillor were both the subject of Jimmy Kimmel‘s opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night (November 29).

The late night host addressed Matt‘s firing, as well as President Donald Trump‘s response to the news – and what it could mean for Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.

“As far as Matt Lauer goes, what happens now? Does he have to do an emotional sit-down interview with himself?” he joked.

Jimmy also poked fun at Prairie Home Companion ex-host Garrison getting fired: “Can you imagine people published from Minnesota Public Radio? It’s like having your library card revoked.”

Video of Matt Lauer Making a Lewd Comment to Meredith Vieira in 2006 Resurfaces - Watch

A lewd comment made by Matt Lauer to Meredith Vieira back in 2006 has resurfaced in the wake of the news of his firing by NBC on Wednesday (November 29) due to inappropriate sexual behavior.

In the video, Matt whispers to Meredith: “Pretty sweater. Keep bending over like that. It’s a nice view.”

The comment was made while the show had gone to commercial, however at least one local station apparently stayed on the in-studio feed.

The female co-host in question was originally thought to be Katie Couric as her face isn’t shown, but was later determined by TMZ to be Meredith.

The video comes at the same time as Katie‘s 2012 appearance on What Watch Happens Live makes headlines again, during which she alleged that Matt “pinched her butt a lot.”
