'The Crown' Producers Apologize to Claire Foy & Matt Smith Over Pay Disparity

Left Bank pictures, the company who produces Netflix’s The Crown, has issued a statement apologizing after a pay disparity between the stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith came to light.

“We want to apologize to both Claire Foy and to Matt Smith, brilliant actors and friends, who have found themselves at the centre of a media storm this week through no fault of their own. Claire and Matt are incredibly gifted actors who, along with the wider cast on The Crown have worked tirelessly to bring our characters to life with compassion and integrity,” Left Bank said in a statement (via Variety). “As the producers of The Crown, we at Left Bank Pictures are responsible for budgets and salaries; the actors are not aware of who gets what, and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues.”

Matt has especially been getting attention after it was revealed he was paid more than Claire, and a petition emerged trying to get him to donate his salary to Time’s Up.

'The Crown' Announces Salary Parity After Claire Foy Revealed to Earn Less Than Matt Smith

The Crown is adjusting the pay of its stars.

Following the revelation that Matt Smith earned more than Claire Foy during the first two seasons of the hit show, producers announced on Tuesday (March 13) that they have adjusted their compensation rates.

“Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie said at a conference in Israel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She also acknowledged that Matt‘s experience on Doctor Who is what fueled the initial salary disparity.

New actors are being brought in to replace both Claire and Matt‘s roles for the third and fourth seasons: Olivia Colman will take over for Claire as Queen Elizabeth, while the new Prince Philip has yet to be announced.

Matt Smith Will Play Charles Manson in 'Charlie Says'

Matt Smith will play Charles Manson in an upcoming movie called Charlie Says, directed by Mary Harron.

The upcoming film is based on source material from Ed Sanders‘ 1971 bestseller The Family, as well as The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten by Karlene Faith, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Suki Waterhouse will be joining the cast as well, along with Hannah Murray, Marianne Rendon, Cara Gugino, Kaylie Carter and Merritt Wever.

Charlie Says will focus on the three women who were sentenced to death in Charles Manson’s (Smith) murder case. When the death penalty was lifted, their sentence became life imprisonment. One young graduate student, Karlene Faith (Wever), was sent in to teach them, and through her the film will follow their transformations as they face the reality of their horrific crimes.

The film is set to shoot in Los Angeles this spring.
