Matthew McConaughey is all smiles on the red carpet as he arrives at the HISTORYTalks & Leadership Event on Saturday (February 29) at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The 50-year-old Oscar winner looked handsome in a gray plaid suit as he attended the event.

During the event, Matt opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about changing the direction of his career and said he had to “un-brand” himself from just starring in romantic comedies.

“I took off, and had an un-branding phase. Not a re-branding phrase, an un-branding phase,” Matt recalled after the birth of his son Levi in 2008. “I said, ‘I’m out.’”

“That anonymity, that being away, that not being the shirtless guy on the beach in a rom-com, by un-branding, then all of a sudden things came to me that I had been wanting to do,” Matt added. “Dramatic roles that I had been pursuing were coming my way.”

Other stars in attendance included Trevor Noah, journalist Ronan Farrow, activist Gloria Steinem, Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi, and tennis icon Billie Jean King.

Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant sit down for their interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday (January 17) in New York City.

The co-stars from the new movie The Gentlemen joined Jimmy for a game of “True Confessions,” in which they took turns confessing a random fact before interrogating each other to determine who was telling the truth.

Matthew‘s confession: “I once ate peyote in a cage with a mountain lion.”

Jimmy‘s confession: “I got hit by a car at full speed and survived.”

Hugh‘s confession: “As a child, I had a compulsion to stick apple peel up my nose, and I spent many happy hours having it removed by London’s finest doctors.”

Matthew McConaughey is setting up his mother!

The Gentleman actor is planning to set up his mother with his co-star Hugh Grant‘s father, he confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“His father’s 91, my mother’s 88. Yeah, why not? Next week, they’re supposed to meet, and we probably won’t see them for the rest of the night,” Matthew said.

Hugh chimed in, saying that the date will be “red hot.”

The two came up with the idea while they were discussing their mother and father’s plans during Christmas in a Mashable interview.

“Would your 87-year-old mother like a nice 91-year-old Englishman? She still married? Your dad still alive?” Hugh asked.

“No, no, pop moved on in ’92. And then her second man of 19 years just moved on two years ago, so she’s single and vital,” Matthew confirmed.

After a screening the night before, Matt took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with Hugh, Charlie, and fellow cast member Henry Golding stepping out for a “Gentlemen slice” at a pizza place!

The Gentlemen follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.

The 50-year-old actor’s wife, Camila Alves, was also seen around the city, attending some meetings.

It has been reported that Matthew is being eyed for the role of Reverse Flash in the upcoming The Flash movie, opposite Ezra Miller.

Reverse Flash aka Eobard Thawne is also known as Professor Zoom in the DC comics, and is a scientist obsessed with The Flash.

The movie has undergone several delays and as of right now, won’t be out until at least 2021.
