Author Emily Giffin Admits Her Comments About Meghan Markle Were 'Just Mean'

Emily Giffin has opened up about her mean comments about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in a new interview, while promoting her new book.

The author came under fire last month when she called the 38-year-old Duchess a “phony” and “unmaternal”.

Now, Emily is admitting that she took her comments too far.

“Well, you know, there’s one thing to have, you know, to in general have legitimate criticisms of people, but that’s a whole other thing,” Emily said to AP (via ET Canada). “My comments were not legitimate. They were just mean, so that’s sort of two separate things.”

She continued, “I mean, I do think it’s OK that there’s this whole idea of is it ever OK to criticize one another? You know, as women or as is people like should we just never get to criticize? And I think we can go too far with that. I don’t think we need to treat each other with kid gloves. Women treat each other as women with kid gloves, especially when criticized.”

“Criticism is legitimate. But just that wasn’t the case with these comments.”

Emily‘s first comments about Meghan came after she and husband, Prince Harry, shared a video of reading to their son Archie as they raised money for Save the Children.

“We all try to help any new member of the family,” Sophie told The Times about reaching out to the Duchess to better acclimate her to the new lifestyle. “I just hope they will be happy.”

And when asked to compare her situation as a newcomer to the Duchess’, she said, “Remember I’d had five years to adjust, and for our six-month engagement I was even staying in Buckingham Palace. Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out.”

The publication also reported that the Countess became a confidante for the Duchess during their time in the spotlight.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are finding ways to support communities and contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement during this trying time.

A source spoke with People about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s mission to connect and support leaders around them, amid protests in the aftermath of countless senseless murders of Black people.

“They are holding calls with community leaders and organizations but are doing that privately as they continue to see how they can play a role. But they also want to learn and talk about it like the rest of us,” the source shared.

Earlier in the week, Meghan recorded a message for the graduating Class of 2020 for her alma matter, Immaculate Heart High School.

Another source shared that Meghan‘s “heart hurts” for the young people who are graduating into a world of “injustice,” and that she hoped that her words provided a “small bit of hope, comfort or inspiration” to the school community as they head out into the world.

Meghan Markle Delivers Powerful Statement Amid Protests

Duchess Meghan Markle gave a powerful speech to the graduating students at Los Angeles’ Immaculate Heart High School during a commencement address on Wednesday (June 3).

“For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been planning on saying a few words to you for your graduation and as we all have seen over the past few weeks, what is happening in our country and in our state and in our hometown of L.A. has been absolutely devastating. And I wasn’t sure what I could say to you. I wanted to say the right thing. And I was really nervous that I wouldn’t, or that it would get picked apart, and I realized—the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing,” the Duchess began.

“Because George Floyd‘s life mattered, and Breonna Taylor‘s life mattered, and Philando Castile‘s life mattered, and Tamir Rice‘s life mattered, and so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we don’t know. Stephon Clark. His life mattered,” she added. “The first thing I want to say to you is that I’m sorry. I’m so sorry you have to grow up in a world where this is still present.”

“You are going to lead with love, you are going to lead with compassion, you are going to use your voice. You are going to use your voice in a stronger way than you have ever been able to, because most of you are 18, or you’re going to turn 18, so you’re going to vote. You are going to have empathy for those who don’t see the world through the same lens that you do—because with as diverse, vibrant, and open-minded as I know the teachings at Immaculate Heart are, I know you know that black lives matter. You are equipped, you are ready, we need you, and you’re prepared,” she added.

The Duchess made headlines this week after a resurfaced video featured her speaking about racism years ago.

Meghan Markle Speaks Out About Racism & Her Experiences in Resurfaced Video

A video from 2012 featuring Meghan Markle has resurfaced.

The video is from the “I Won’t Stand For…” campaign with the charity Erase the Hate. In the video, the Duchess speaks out about racism.

“I’m biracial. Most people can’t tell what I’m mixed with, and so much of my life has felt like being a fly on the wall,” Meghan said in the video, which circulated the Internet in December after originally debuting 8 years ago. “And so some of the slurs I’ve heard or the really offensive jokes, or the names, it’s just hit me in a really strong way.”

“You know, a couple of years ago I heard someone call my mom [Doria Ragland] the N-word. So I think for me, beyond being personally affected by racism, just to see the landscape of what our country is like right now, certainly the world, and to want things to be better,” she added.

She then said, “certain people don’t look at me and see me as a black woman or a biracial woman….They treat me differently I think than they would if they knew what I was mixed with and I think that is, I don’t know, it can be a struggle as much as it can be a good thing depending on the people that you’re dealing with.”

There were calls of racist actions throughout the time that Meghan was part of the royal family, including several upsetting incidents that were made public.

“I am really proud of my heritage on both sides. I’m really proud of where I’ve come from and where I’m going,” Meghan concluded. “But yeah, I hope that by the time I have children that people are even more open-minded to how things are changing and that having a mixed world is what it’s all about. I mean, certainly, it makes it a lot more beautiful and a lot more interesting.”

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Are Dealing With Drone Flybys Over Their Los Angeles Home

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reported multiple drone flybys over their new Los Angeles to police, according to The Daily Beast.

The report says that the drones have flown as low as 20 feet above ground to catch glimpses of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and their one-year-old son, Archie.

A source shared that Harry and Meghan have been coping with press intrusion at the residence since stepping down as senior royals earlier this year.

The drone-related incidents happened on May 9th, 19th, 20th, 21st, and 25th, and were all reported.

“They see these drones coming in at them, and they guess that they are being operated by photographers, but they can’t just assume that. Meghan received racist death threats at the time of her wedding, so the terror threat is very real for them,” the source shared, adding, “But, aside from that, imagine if you were in their shoes facing that, how that would feel? To have drones buzzing around 20 feet above your head when you are trying to play with your son?”

It was recently revealed just how Meghan and Harry celebrated their two year wedding anniversary.
