Metallica's Lars Ulrich Talks Microphone Not Working At The Grammys: 'We Didn't Know'

Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich has broken his silence about his bandmate James Hetfield‘s microphone not working during their 2017 Grammy Awards performance with Lady Gaga!

“In the heat of that moment, it’s very difficult when you’re aware of the fact that something’s not functioning, [but] you don’t know where in the chain of possible mishaps [it could be]. You don’t know where that’s going on, so you really don’t have a choice other than to just keep battling on,” the 53-year-old co-founder and drummer said while speaking with Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday morning (February 14).

“It’s live television,” Lars added. “A couple of people where like, ‘Why didn’t you stop the song?’ We didn’t know there was a problem… you have no choice but to carry on. The ensuing chaos and energy and complete over-the-top excitement, it was absolutely awesome.”

“It was totally energetic and crazy,” Lars continued. “It was just energy and excitement and nuttiness, so her [Gaga] being right in my face just added to the whole exhilarating energy that was happening for those few minutes. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve gotten 700 texts from people just saying the chaos and tornado-like energy of it really translated well on TV.”

Metallica's James Hetfield Throws Guitar Off Stage After Sound Issues During Grammys Performance With Lady Gaga

James Hetfield, lead vocalist and guitarist of Metallica, is not happy after performing at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

While performing on stage with Lady Gaga, his mic didn’t seem to work until halfway through the song, at the Staples Center on Sunday (February 12) in Los Angeles.

James then stepped over to share a mic with Gaga.

At the end of the performance, he forcibly threw his white electric guitar backstage, along with his pick, which you can see below.

This came right after Adele also had some sort of technical issue, stopping the song in the middle of her George Michael tribute and starting over.

Metallica takes the stage for a rock-filled concert at CBS Radio’s 2016 The Night Before concert ahead of the 2016 Super Bowl held at AT&T Park on Saturday evening (February 6) in San Francisco, Calif.

The guys – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo – are from the Bay Area and a lot of fans were bummed to hear they weren’t asked to play the halftime show.

“The fan base is really wide, but as far as playing halftime for the Super Bowl, I have a feeling that ship has passed,” James said. “We’re not a variety show. We’re not pop. We’re not sparkly and all that kind of stuff that I think seems to be what is needed for that.”
