Michael B. Jordan Added 15 Pounds of Muscle After 'Creed' to Play Villain in 'Black Panther'

Michael B. Jordan‘s trainer Corey Calliet is opening up about the grueling weightlifting regimen he had to go through to make Michael look like a convincing superhero bad guy in Black Panther!

“He told me, ‘I need to look like this,’ and it’s a picture of Killmonger fighting Black Panther,” Corey told Business Insider. “He was very big, so I knew I had to make Mike look like a free safety or a Marine. If you want to be a villain you have to have that savage type of demeanor.”

Corey also revealed that Michael added 15 pounds of muscle from Creed to Black Panther. “The way I train, the person never gets used to it,” Corey said. “I would have him do squats and then move right to burpees — that’s not a good feeling. It was nothing that was enjoyable.”

Chadwick Boseman & 'Black Panther' Cover Essence's New Issue

Chadwick Boseman poses on the cover of Essence magazine‘s March 2018 issue, on newsstands February 23.

There are three covers for the issue – one with Chadwick going solo, one of him and Black Panther co-stars Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, and Forest Whitaker, and another with the film’s female stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, and Letitia Wright.

Here is what the stars had to say:

Danai on what the role meant to her: “The idea of creating a scenario where you’re seeing very powerful, empowered Africans is really thrilling to me, something my heart, soul and spirit yearned to see…”

Lupita on the wonder of Wakanda: “For me, as an African in this film, to walk on set and to see these incredible costumes and hairdos, these are the things I grew up seeing, but they’ve just been elevated to a fantastical place. We’re going to experience the richness of the continent, because the continent is what has informed us of what Wakanda could be…”

Letitia on the importance of the film: “We understand the responsibility. That it can shift mind-sets. I can be a Black superhero. I can be a scientist. I’m a queen. I’m a young prince. It’s not about me. It’s bigger than me. It’s bigger than all of us…”
