Michael Bay Clears Up Thoughts on Kate Beckinsale: 'I Truly Respect Her'

Michael Bay is responding to Kate Beckinsale‘s story about when he cast her for Pearl Harbor back in 2001.

The 51-year-old director took to his website to explain that things got misconstrued in the press, and that he respects her a lot.

Kate had told a story on The Graham Norton Show about how he suggested she get a personal trainer.

“Really? This poster has hung proudly over my desk for 15 years,” Michael wrote alongside a poster of Kate. “Yesterday I read in the press that I don’t think Kate Beckinsale is ‘a stunning beauty,’ huh? And they went on to suggest that Kate and I don’t like each other?”

He continued, “Well, totally untrue. Kate and I are friendly. She is a fantastic actress, very funny, witty lady, sassy, speaks her mind, and I truly respect her…So I guess I was the ‘bad guy’ 16 years ago for suggesting a trainer because she just had her new beautiful baby girl”and she was about to enter into an intensive action movie. Note to reporters: 95 % of leads in movies have trainers and drink green juice!”

Kate Beckinsale Talks Meeting Michael Bay for the First Time

Kate Beckinsale wears a black outfit under her white coat while heading into BBC Radio 2 studios on Thursday (May 26) in London, England.

The 42-year-old actress made an appearance on The Graham Norton Show this week and talked about director Michael Bay‘s comments about her looks.

“I don’t think I fit the type of actress Michael Bay had met before,” Kate said about meeting with him for Pearl Harbor. “I think he was baffled by me because my boobs weren’t bigger than my head and I wasn’t blonde.”

“I’d just had my daughter and had lost weight, but was told that if I got the part, I’d have to work out. And I just didn’t understand why a 1940s nurse would do that,” Kate added. “When we were promoting the film, Michael was asked why he had chosen Ben [Affleck] and Josh [Hartnett], and he said, ‘I have worked with Ben before and I love him, and Josh is so manly and a wonderful actor.’ Then when he was asked about me, he’d say, ‘Kate wasn’t so attractive that she would alienate the female audience.’ He kept saying it everywhere we went, and we went to a lot of places.”
