The 31-year-old swimmer competed with the U.S. team – which included Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, and Nathan Adrian – during the 4×100-meter medley relay on Saturday night (August 13) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
After it was announced that they won, the crowds cheered on an emotional Michael as he hugged his teammates.
“I’ve had the opportunity to be on some of the greatest relays of all time,” Michael told CBS Sports. “It truly is an honor.”
While in Rio, Michael has won five gold medals and one silver, making him the most decorated Olympian in history.
The 30-year-old swimmer took the chance to clarify the rumors after the 100m Butterfly, where he took the silver.
“I will just clarify that Ryan doesn’t know what he is talking about. I am not coming back in four years,” he explained.
Michael added, “I have two laps left in my career so I am happy and I’m excited and looking forward to tomorrow. I saw (what Ryan said) and I was like ‘thanks Ryan, throw me back out there for another four years.’ If he wants to come back it will be great.”
Michael‘s last race will be the 4×100-meter medley relay on Saturday, August 13.
This is the first Olympics medal for the 21-year-old athlete and the first gold medal for his home country of Singapore.
Meanwhile, Michael took the silver medal in a three-way tie with South African swimmer Chad le Clos and Lazlo Cseh of Hungary. This marks Michael‘s 26th medal.
Coincidentally, Michael met Joseph in 2008 and NBC shared a cute throwback photo during the race.
“It’s rather amazing to think of Michael’s journey since 2000 at age 15 and now 31,” Debbie said. “Michael is very driven, driven to correct things that have gone wrong, to set goals for himself as to where he wants to be. I’ve never seen him so happy as he is now.”
“It’s been incredible, because I’ve watched it first-hand — the training, the dedication, the downside and coming back from all of that,” Nicole added.
