Michael Sam Officially Cut From Cowboys Practice Squad, He Will 'Fight For An Opportunity' to Stay in the Game

The first openly gay NFL player Michael Sam has officially been cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, the team reports on their official site.

The 24-year-old defensive end rookie was waived from the team, which opened a spot for linebacker Troy Davis in the squad.

Michael was originally drafted to the St. Louis Rams in the NFL draft this past Spring, but was cut back in August.

“I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity, as well as my friends, family, teammates and fans for their support. While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday,” Michael tweeted in response to the news.

Michael Sam Close to Joining Dallas Cowboys Practice Squad

Michael Sam was reportedly flown out to Dallas, Texas on Tuesday evening (September 2) to take a physical to join the Cowboys’ practice team, ESPN reports.

If the 24-year-old football player passes the physical, he will reportedly be offered a spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

“It’s been a roller coaster this past week but I’m happy where I’m at now,” Michael, who is looking to become the first openly homosexual NFL player in the league, said. “I’m just looking forward to being a Cowboy, my focus is on making the team.”

“It has all happened so quickly, but it’s exciting, I just wanna get back to playing football you know,” Michael said. “I haven’t had chance to speak to any of my family yet, not even my mom, but I will. I never followed the Cowboys growing up because I never had a team. I am a fan of defenses and Dallas need some help, that’s why I’m going.”

Michael was cut from the St. Louis Rams over the weekend.

Michael, who hopes to become the first openly gay NFL player, can still be picked up by another team by Sunday (August 31).

Football Player Michael Sam Officially Cut by St. Louis Rams

Michael Sam, who was recognized this year for being the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team, has been cut by the St. Louis Rams.

According to ESPN, the 24-year-old defensive end and seventh-round draft pick didn’t make the team after they had to trim their roster down to 53 players. Though, another team can still pick him up by Sunday (August 31), or if he goes unclaimed, he can sign up for the Rams‘ practice squad.

“I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. Football Player Michael Sam Displays His Muscles for 'Out,' Discusses Coming Out to His Team

Football player Michael Sam, famous for his public kiss with boyfriend Vito Cammisano during the NFL draft, shows off his muscles on the cover of Out magazine’s August 2014 issue.

Here’s what the 24-year-old St. Louis Rams player had to share with the mag:

On his boyfriend: “We didn’t start off as huge fans of each other. I went up to him to ask if he was OK [when he puked at a party], and he started cursing at me, screaming, ‘F*ck off – do you know who I am?’ I told him I didn’t care who he was. We didn’t speak again for two years.”

On being gay at school: “Everyone knew Vito was gay, so we couldn’t even be seen together. There was a lot of climbing out of windows. Vito was really the person who showed me I had to do it. I wanted us to be comfortable.”

On coming out to his team: “When I got up there in front of my team, it was actually the first time I said the words to anyone: ‘I am gay.’ Mizzou is a family. At another school, it might have been a different story.”
