Mila Kunis has penned a powerful essay, chronicling her experience with sexism in Hollywood and what needs to be done to change it.
In the essay, the 33-year-old actress explains how a producer threatened that she’d never work again after refusing to pose partially naked on the cover of a men’s magazine to promote their film.
“I was livid, I felt objectified, and for the first time in my career I said ‘no.’ And guess what? The world didn’t end. The film made a lot of money and I did work in this town again, and again, and again. What this producer may never realize is that he spoke aloud the exact fear every woman feels when confronted with gender bias in the workplace,” Mila wrote.
She went on to talk about how she has been “insulted, sidelined, paid less, creatively ignored, and otherwise diminished” based on her gender and instead of continuing to be complicit, she created her own production company with other women.
Mila continued by sharing an experience where her “significant creative and logistical contributions” were reduced to her relationship with husband Ashton Kutcher. The experience led her to make a promise to confront all gender biased comments head on, in order to educate others.
She concluded, “I’m done compromising; even more so, I’m done with being compromised…I am also fortunate that I have the platform to talk about this experience in the hope of bringing one more voice to the conversation so that women in the workplace feel a little less alone and more able to push back for themselves.”
Mila‘s husband Ashton responded to her post on his Facebook, writing, “I’m so proud of my wife for making a stand. The effort to overcome gender bias is a battle in which we all have a role to play.”
