A Third Season of 'Mindhunter' Seems Very Unlikely, According to David Fincher

We have some upsetting news for fans of the Netflix series Mindhunter.

David Fincher, the executive producer of the series and also the director of most of the episodes, has said it’s very unlikely that a third season will be made.

“We lived [in Pittsburgh] for almost three years. Not year in, year out, but we spent probably six or seven months a year over three years. We had an apartment there, and a car. Mindhunter was a lot for me,” Fincher said in a new interview with Vulture.

When asked if Mindhunter is “done” as far as he’s concerned, Fincher said, “I think probably.”

“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs,” Fincher added.

He also said, “It’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.’”

The future of the series was left in limbo back in January when Jonathan Groff and the other cast members’ contracts expired.

Fincher‘s new Netflix movie Mank will be released in December.

Mindhunter's Future In Doubt As Netflix Lets Cast Contracts Expire

Mindhunter may not be getting a third season, and this is based on what Netflix let happen to the contracts of cast members including Holt McCallany. Anna Torv, and Jonathan Groff.

The cast were reportedly all released from their contracts last month when they expired.

A Netflix spokesperson explained that David Fincher, the director of the series, is currently busy.

David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a spokesperson told Deadline. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

This news is especially surprising given how popular the show is.

Jonathan Groff Shot the Same 9-Minute 'Mindhunter' Scene 75 Times

Jonathan Groff attends a For Your Consideration event for his Netflix series Mindhunter on Friday night (June 1) at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles.

The 33-year-old actor was joined at the event by co-stars Anna Torv, Holt McCallany, and Cameron Britton, as well as director David Fincher.

David opened up about how he had his cast do many, many takes of each scene.

“The scene with Happy [Anderson] was 11 pages. We had three cameras outside the cage, and we’d do a nine-and-a-half-minute take,” David said (via IndieWire). “We didn’t have a break, well we broke for lunch — I would say we did it 75 times in the day.”

David was really specific with us about every single word, and every single turn of the scene; he was critically specific about the purpose,” Jonathan said. “On the days of shooting, we would go in the room, sit down, and talk about how leaning forward could change the dynamic of a conversation.”
