Hugh Jackman & Sutton Foster's 'Music Man' to Close on Broadway

Hugh Jackman‘s hit Broadway show, the Music Man, is sadly coming to an end, producers announced.

The 53-year-old actor stars alongside Tony winner Sutton Foster in the revival of the musical, currently playing at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City. The show will end its run on January 1, 2023.

“We are so proud of our extraordinary company, led by Hugh and Sutton, for their tireless work in bringing joy to our audiences night after night,” Kate Horton, the show’s producer said in a statement (via Variety). “I am thrilled that Hugh and Sutton will continue to create their unique magic to the stage right through to the end of 2022 so that we can properly close out what has been a triumphant year for our entire industry. Most of all, we are endlessly grateful for the faith and support of our audiences, whose love affair with our show has weathered even the most complicated circumstances a global pandemic could throw our way. We wish this ride could last forever but, alas, all good things must come to an end.”

There was talk that the show might have continued its run with another huge star in the leading role of Professor Harold Hill, but it looks like producers decided to close instead.

Just before the announcement that the show would be closing, Hugh walked the red carpet at the premiere of his film The Son during the 2022 Toronto Film Festival on Monday night (September 12) in Toronto, Canada. He was joined at the premiere by director Florian Zeller with his wife, actress Marine Delterme, among other producers and behind-the-scenes execs. See all those photos in the gallery of this post.

Broadway's 'Music Man' Opening Postponed Until May 2021

Broadway’s The Music Man, starring Hugh Jackman, has postponed their opening by several months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The show, which will also star Sutton Foster, was supposed to open on October 22, 2020. Broadway has a tentative opening date of September 2020, but many believe that will be pushed back by months with hopes that a vaccine will offer immunity and allow everyone to gather once again.

Hugh said, “Performing on Broadway is a great honor for an actor; in fact, one of the greatest. No two shows are exactly alike, in large part due to the audience. Show One is filled with anticipation, fear and excitement. It’s like an opening night 8 times a week; the energy in the theater is palpable. It is those same feelings that happen every show thereafter – and you and I are going through it together. The change of dates will not take any of that away. What it will do, however, is help to ensure that The Music Man audiences, and our company, are in a completely safe environment. Can’t wait for that day!”

The show will now open on May 20, 2021, with a rehearsal start date of February, 2021.

This Broadway revival has now been planned for years, and we can’t wait to check it out!

NBC Sets 'The Music Man' Live Production for 2015!

NBC is adding yet another musical to its live event slate – The Music Man will be coming to your television screen next year!

While no timetable is set for the production yet, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced during the network’s upfront presentation that he has closed a deal to air a live version of the musical in 2015, according to THR.

The Music Man “centers on a con man, who poses as a boys’ band organizer and leader and sells band instruments and uniforms to the naive Iowa townsfolk, promising to train the members of the new band.”

The critically acclaimed 1962 film adaptation of the musical starred Robert Preston and Shirley Jones while a 2003 television movie featured Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth.
