NASA Cancels Artemis Launch After Engine Issues; Discusses Relaunch Plans

NASA had to make a difficult decision this morning (August 29) and cancel the planned launch for Artemis I, the first unmanned mission to the moon and back to Earth.

According to CNN, the mission was called off after the team was unable to work through an issue with one of the rocket’s four engines.

“It’s too early to say what the options are,” Mike Sarafin, Artemis mission manager at a NASA press conference, shared with press. “We really need time to look at all the information, all the data. We’re going to play all nine innings here. We’re not ready to give up yet.”

Astronauts Bob Behnken & Doug Hurley Say Goodbye to Families from a Distance Ahead of SpaceX Launch

Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley are all suited up while saying goodbye to their families ahead of the NASA & SpaceX rocket launch on Saturday (May 30) at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The two astronauts are going to space in the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with the Crew Dragon spacecraft. This is NASA’s first manned mission since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011 and it also marks SpaceX’s first-ever crewed mission.

The launch was supposed to happen earlier this week, but it was postponed due to weather just 17 minutes ahead of the planned launch.

The families had to stand at a distance while saying goodbye to Bob and Doug due to quarantine.

NASA's SpaceX Launch Has Been Postponed Due to Weather

The Launch America initiative is not moving forward as planned.

Just moments before the launch was set to begin, NASA called off what was set to be a historic mission on Wednesday (May 27) due to weather conditions, Variety reported.

Here’s what was set to happen, via NASA: “NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will fly on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, lifting off on a Falcon 9 rocket at 4:33 p.m. EDT May 27, from Launch Complex 39A in Florida, for an extended stay at the space station for the Demo-2 mission. The specific duration of the mission is to be determined. As the final flight test for SpaceX, this mission will validate the company’s crew transportation system, including the launch pad, rocket, spacecraft, and operational capabilities. This also will be the first time NASA astronauts will test the spacecraft systems in orbit.”

However, because of “threatening weather conditions in Florida,” it was called off. They will make another attempt on Saturday (May 30) at 3:22 p.m. ET, weather permitting.

The mission is the first crewed launch in the history of Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, and the first time NASA will be sending astronauts into space since 2011.

President Donald Trump and vice president Mike Pence were among the VIPs in attendance at Kennedy Space Center.

Celebrities React to NASA's New Planet Announcement - Read the Tweets

NASA Announced on Wednesday (February 22) that they recently found seven Earth-sized planets around a star outside of our solar system – and three are in a habitable zone.

The “habitable zone” is the area around the parent star where a planet could have liquid water.

This discovery is a big deal because it now sets a record for the greatest number of habitable planets found outside of a planet. All seven could potentially have liquid water, which is the key to our survival on other planets under the right atmospheric conditions.

“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said in a statement. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.” Watch a video below to find out more info…
