Nicki Minaj Did Not Commit Copyright Infringement, Judge Rules, in Tracy Chapman Lawsuit

Nicki Minaj came out victorious in her lawsuit against singing Tracy Chapman, as a judge ruled she did not commit copyright infringement.

The lawsuit claimed that Nicki committed copyright infringement when she experimented with Tracy‘s “Baby Can I Hold You” song for her own, “Sorry”.

Variety reports that a judge ruled on Wednesday that Nicki was within the realms of “fair use” of the song and it is not copyright infringement.

Nicki had worked on “Sorry” with recording artist Nasir Bin Olu in 2017 and during that time, she had believed the song was a remake of another track by Shelly Thunder.

“Baby Can I Hold You” was included on Tracy‘s debut album in 1988.

Nicki and her reps reached out to Tracy for permission to use the song, but she denied the request.

However, a copy of the unreleased track made its way to DJ Flex, a New York radio DJ, who then played it on the air, which is where the copyright issue comes into play.

Nicki‘s attorneys said that Tracy‘s lawsuit against Nicki “should send a shiver down the spine of those concerned with the entertainment industry” and the added that a ruling in favor of Tracy would “impose a financial and administrative burden so early in the creative process that all but the most well-funded creators would be forced to abandon their visions at the outset.”

The judge agreed, and in writing stated that “artists usually experiment with works before seeking licenses from rights holders and rights holders typically ask to see a proposed work before approving a license. A ruling uprooting these common practices would limit creativity and stifle innovation within the music industry.”

CeeLo Green Criticizes Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion & Cardi B; Questioning Their Musical Content

CeeLo Green opened up in a new interview and revealed exactly what he thought about three of the top female rappers right now – Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

In the feature from Far Out magazine, the 45-year-old musician questioned if people should really be calling the three role models, given the adult content they have been rapping about in their music.

“A lot of music today is very unfortunate and disappointing on a personal and moral level,” he explained. “There was once a time when we were savvy enough to code certain things. We could express to those it was meant for with the style of language we used. But now music is shameless, it is sheer savagery.”

CeeLo added, “It’s problematic, we suffer from it because there are those that have nothing to do with it, but it is assumed of everyone. You have the ‘Heads of State,’ like Nicki Minaj or someone who is up there in accolade: success, visibility, a platform to influence. Nicki could be effective in so many other constructive ways, but it feels desperate.”

He went on, “Attention is also a drug and competition is around…Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, they are all more or less doing similar salacious gesturing to kinda get into position. I get it, the independent woman and being in control, the divine femininity and sexual expression. I get it all, [but] it comes at what cost?”

CeeLo was rightfully met with backlash on social media for his comments, with some Twitter users pointing out his own lyrics aren’t something to aspire to.

“Ceelo Green has the audacity to speak on Nicki but not hold male rappers at the same status,” one wrote, with another adding, “CeeLo a f***ing hypocrite & sexist asf. its hella rappers still putting out gang banging drug dealer murder music, while we’re continuously dying via police/govt/interpersonal beefs, yet you point out women shaking they ass as ‘distasteful’ and needing ‘time and place.’ go eat.”

Cardi B Refers To Nicki Minaj As The One Recent Female Rapper Who 'Dominated' In New Interview

Cardi B is kind of giving a shout out to Nicki Minaj.

While not naming her by name, in her latest interview with Apple Music, the 27-year-old rapper opened up how female rappers once dominated the music scene and why she thinks they got quiet.

“When I was younger, when I was eight… No wait, I’m lying. When I was six, seven, eight, there was a lot different female rappers. And then there was a time that there was no female rappers at all. I have to keep replaying songs from the early 2000s. I have to keep replaying it, replaying it, replaying it because for a while there wasn’t no female rapper,” Cardi shared. “And then there was one female rapper that dominated for a very long time.”

She adds, “And she did pretty good. She’s been still dominating.”

Cardi went on, saying that “you never, you never know if there is ever going to be a drought. You never know when people get tired of all the female rappers or people just stop… I don’t know, promoting them. Cause I don’t know what happened in that, in a time period. But there was none at all for a hot minute. So you just never know the prediction. Maybe there will be a lot. Maybe there’s going to be a time that people just get tired of it. And then there might be another rapper that just come and just take it over. You just never know, you know what I’m saying? We never know.”

There’s been a long feud between Cardi and Nicki, who met on the set of Migos’ “MotorSport” video. Their dispute escalated after a fight at a Fashion Week party in 2018.

Cardi B Addresses Allegations of Secret Instagram Account Amid 'Cardi B Is Over' Party on Twitter

Cardi B is addressing accusations.

The 27-year-old “Bodak Yellow” rapper spoke out on Twitter on Thursday (June 25) amid allegations that she runs a secret Instagram account (or “finsta”), allegedly talking bad about other female artists, resulting in “Cardi B Is Canceled” and “Cardi B Is Over Party” trends on Twitter.

“So I woke up…I’m seeing that they’re trying to make this Cardi B Is Canceled Party…I’m seeing these people, I guess they’re editing or claiming I have a fake Instagram,” she explained.

“These people must think I’m a 15 year old girl, and they claim Lil Kim and my hairstylist, makeup artist and sister follows the page. They never did. They even made fake Photoshopped comments from my hairstylist, which we proved was fake,” she continued.

“I don’t even speak to Lil Kim. I’m going to have to check my DMs…I don’t personally know her that well,” she said.

“They’re claiming I was talking about this girl that I clearly…you know, everybody knows our issues,” she went on to say, seemingly referencing Nicki Minaj.

Ariana Grande. Ariana Grande? I don’t even have a problem with her. Why would I talk about her? I like her music. I never had a problem with her….Doja Cat, Meg[an Thee Stallion],,,I don’t even know why you guys want me to have issues with these people so badly. ‘Oh she hates every female.’ I’m not even like that…stop trying to make this fake s–t up…don’t make lies about me. it’s tiring. It’s annoying.”
