Reese Witherspoon Explains Why Female Stories Are Important to Tell on Screen

Reese Witherspoon is speaking out about why it’s so important for female stories to be told on screen and why this led her to develop the new HBO series Big Little Lies.

The Oscar-winning actress was joined by co-stars Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz while promoting the show at the 2017 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Saturday morning (January 14) at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.

“I’m passionate because things have to change. We have to start seeing women as they really are in film. And not just in a movie theater with a tiny budget. We need to see real women’s experience whether it involves domestic violence, whether is involves sexual assault whether it involves motherhood or romance or infidelity or divorce,” Reese said (via Vanity Fair). “We need to see these things because we as human beings we learn from art and what can you do if you never see it reflected? I feel like I constantly see women of incredible talent playing wives and girlfriends in thankless parts, I just had enough.”

“It’s a unique pleasure to be able to come to other women with a piece of material I feel deeply proud of and excited to see their performance. These are the kinds of things that shift consciousness,” Reese added.

FYI: Reese is wearing an Alexander McQueen dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Jennifer Meyer jewelry. Nicole is wearing a Bottega Veneta dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, and an Omega watch. Shailene is wearing a Bottega Veneta outfit. Zoe is wearing an Alexander Wang dress and Sophia Webster shoes.

Nicole Kidman Defends Her Comments About Donald Trump

Nicole Kidman is defending the comments she made about supporting Donald Trump earlier this week.

The 49-year-old actress had previously said that she thought Americans needed to support whoever was president.

During an interview with Extra, Nicole clarified her comments and revealed she had actually made her statement two months ago.

“I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American constitution. It’s that simple. I’m out of it now. That’s what I said, and it’s that simple,” she explained.

See all that Nicole had to say in the video below…

Nicole Kidman on Donald Trump: We 'Need to Support Whoever Is the President'

Nicole Kidman is calling for Americans to rally for around the man elected to the President – Donald Trump.

“[Trump is] now elected and we, as a country, need to support whoever is the president,” Nicole said to UK television host Victoria Derbyshire. “That is what the country is based on. And however that happened, it happened, and let’s go.”

Nicole was also asked about marriage equality, adding, “people love each other and want that to be acknowledged legally—because that’s protection, as well as saying you are committed. And commitment is a wonderful thing.”

Donald has been in hot water over the past two days after Russia allegedly had compromising information on the President-elect. Donald has denied these rumors.

Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon Cover 'Elle' with 'Big Little Lies' Co-Stars!

Big Little Lies stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman take the cover of Elle Magazine’s Women in TV issue, on newsstands on January 17.

Also featured on separate covers are co-stars Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley. Here’s what they had to share…

Reese, on the importance of deplorables: “As an artist, I feel more strongly than ever that my job on earth is to tell the stories of the invisibles, and women have been invisible on film for a long time. Women are wives and mothers and girlfriends, but not the center of our own stories. No one’s the good guy; no one’s the bad guy. We all do deplorable things and very honorable things.”

Zoe, on Donald Trump: “There has to be something positive that can come out of [the election]. Already it’s helped me want to connect with everybody. When I go to the deli or I’m talking to a waiter or my Uber driver and they say, “How are you?,” I’ve answered in an honest way for the first time. Like, “Oof.” Even that felt good. Let’s let everything come to the surface, even with people we come in contact with for a moment. This situation can help us be a little bit more awake with each other.”

Shailene, on self worth: “When it comes to sexuality, sensuality, self-representation, self-nurturance—America fails in those departments. Women like Nicole [Kidman] trailblaze these paths of self-love and self-recognition. Not from a pretentious place or a greedy place, but from a place of knowing that in order to help those around you, and in order to even be a good actress and a good mother at the same time, you have to know your worth.”

Nicole, on shooting the show’s sex scenes: “So many of the bruises you see on me aren’t fake. I had to do a shower scene where you would see a lot of them, and I asked them not to put makeup on me. It needed to be pretty raw and out there. There’s certain choreography that you need for a scene like that, so that you don’t actually get your cheekbone shattered, but a lot of the time, they’d say, “Oh, you can put some pads in your back,” and I would say no, because you might be able to see them. I also felt that the nudity was a part of it. It wasn’t about exploitation. It really feeds into their relationship. You really get their sexuality through that.”
