'Normal People' Showrunners & Stars Paul Mescal & Daisy Edgar-Jones Discuss If Series Will Get a Season Two

We finally have an answer if Normal People will get a season two.

During their feature with Deadline‘s Award Line magazine, Paul Mescal, Daisy Edgar-Jones and showrunners, Ed Guiney and Lenny Abrahamson stopped fans from guessing any longer.

The short answer: no.

“We’ve talked about the possibility of how interesting it would be to check back in with them,” Lenny says of Daisy and Paul‘s charters. “But apart from just general musings and over a drink, no. There have been no concrete discussions about what it would be like. As Sally [Rooney, author] says, the book stops where it stops because it feels right. But, I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I’d love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are. Is somebody a father or a mother? What relationship are they in that then get disrupted by their meeting again?”

He adds, “But it would be really strange to pick that up eight weeks later with him traveling to new York, I think. There needs to be time. You’d do it for real, you’d do it a la Before Sunset.”

Paul does have some ideas about where Connell would be in that imaginary season two.

“Connell, I believe, would potentially get married to somebody else,” he says. “It’ll destroy lots of people’s lives along the way, because ultimately they’re going to be drawn. But they will consciously resist the idea that there’re supposed to be together. It’ll be a long process of discovery until they finally find each other permanently.

Paul adds, “I really need them to be together. If Sally ever decides to do the second book or second series, I need them to be together.”

If you didn’t see, Sally‘s other book, “Conversations With Friends”, just got a straight to series order.

Following the breakout success of Normal People, author Sally Rooney‘s 2017 novel, Conversations With Friends, is now getting a straight-to-series order stateside.

Normal People stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.

Conversations with Friends follows two female college students in Dublin who forge an unexpected, strange and sexually charged relationship with an older married couple, which results in a complicated pair of love triangles that upends their lives.

Normal People‘s director Lenny Abrahamson will direct Conversations with Friends.

Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories. After bringing that to life in Normal People to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with Conversations with Friends. We are excited to continue our creative partnership with Sally, Element Pictures, Lenny and the BBC, which has been a dream collaboration,” said Hulu exec Beatrice Springborn.

Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones Reveals How the Intimate Scenes Looked So Realistic

Daisy Edgar-Jones is opening up about the success of her Hulu series Normal People and what it was like filming those intimate scenes with co-star Paul Mescal.

The 22-year-old actress chatted with Porter and said, “I feel very lucky to have met Paul through this process. He’s a wonderful, wonderful person and a very giving actor… He’ll be a friend for life.”

Daisy credits the realistic sex scenes to Ita O’Brien‘s intimacy direction. She said, “You need more protection because it is a stunt, with physical maneuvers that you need to make look realistic – just like in a fight scene… Mentally, it’s a really vulnerable place to put yourself in.”

The show was released back in April while we were in the middle of quarantine, so Daisy hasn’t really been able to experience the success of the show.

“I turn my phone off and then I’m just inside, and my life isn’t very different, so it’s difficult to comprehend that it really is that big… We just can’t believe the reaction,” she said.

Normal People's Paul Mescal Reveals Family's Reaction to His Frequent Sex Scenes

Paul Mescal, one of the stars of Hulu’s new series Normal People, is opening up about what his family thought about his frequent sex scenes in the show.

The 24-year-old Irish actor has many intimate moments with co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones throughout the show’s 12 episodes.

Paul appeared on The Graham Norton Show on Friday night and revealed how his family reacted to seeing him in those moments.

“My granny warned my great aunt that there were a lot of sexy bits, and that when she felt those were about to happen, she should go off and do something else,” Paul said (via Marie Claire). “In episode two, when we started kissing, she took the dog out. But she underestimated the time it would take, and as she came back in we were right in the throes of it all.”

Paul added, “I suggested that a good, long chore or a couple of cups of tea would do the trick next time!”

Normal People's Paul Mescal Speaks About Going Full Frontal for Hulu Hit

Paul Mescal‘s performance as Connell Waldron in Hulu’s Normal People is making waves (as he’s being dubbed the Internet’s new boyfriend!)

Now, he’s speaking out about deciding to go full frontal in the Hulu show. You can see Paul‘s full body in the fifth episode and final episode of the season.

“I’m not concerned about it because I made a choice that this project is something that I’m proud of,” Paul, 24, said to Mr Porter, adding “well, on paper, that makes sense.”

He then added, “The closer I’m getting to people seeing me fully nude on screen – it does make me slightly nervous.”

He also spoke about the numerous sex scenes with his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Marianne.

The pair worked with intimacy coordinator, Ita O’Brien, to help choreograph the sex scenes.

“We would discuss the scene and then Ita would block what we had discussed, so it wasn’t mine or Daisy’s responsibility to decide what was appropriate… You’re told what to do. It’s freeing!” he added.

'Normal People' Season 2 - Could It Happen?

Hulu’s Normal People is a smash hit and fans are wondering…could there be a second season!?

The show is actually based on Sally Rooney’s New York Times best-selling novel, and follows the entirety of the book from beginning to end. So a second season would require a continuation of the book.

However, director of the series, Lenny Abrahamson, didn’t rule it out…but there’s a catch. He’d like to revisit the show in “ten years” to see where the characters are.

“I have a fantasy of doing a kind of ten year seeing where they are in ten years time sort of thing, if I’m not too decrepit at that point,” he told Radio Times.

Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Marianne and Paul Mescal stars as Connell in the hit show.

Here’s a synopsis of the show: Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in a. small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College. At school, he’s well-liked and popular, while she’s lonely, proud and intimidating. But when Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world but Connell hangs at the side lines, shy and uncertain.
