Best Supporting Actress Oscars Category Makes History in 2017

The Best Supporting Actress category for the 2017 Oscars is making history for an amazing reason.

It is the first time in Oscars history where three black female performers were nominated in an acting category at the same time. It is also the first time that three black artists hold a majority in any category.

Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, and Octavia Spencer are nominated for their work in Fences, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures, respectively.

This is not the first time three actors of color were nominated in the same category.

Most recently, this happened in 2006 where Adriana Barraza (Babel), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), and Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) were nominated in the same category.

Taraji P. Henson Doesn't Want 'Hidden Figures' To Be Labeled As A 'Black Movie'

The stars of Hidden FiguresTaraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe – take the cover of Parade magazine’s latest January issue, on newsstands now.

In the film, Taraji, Octavia and Janelle star together as three brilliant African-American women who break gender and race lines while serving as the brains behind John Glenn‘s launch into space – but they do not want the film to be labeled as a “black movie.”

“It’s a label — a bad label,” Taraji told the mag. “Black people understand what we say when we say ‘black movie,’ but Hollywood cannot put that label on it. Yes, they are brilliant African-American females, and all of that should be celebrated. No matter what your color is, you should be able to look at these women as heroes. These are our new superheroes.”

Janelle on the movie’s theme of sisterhood: “This movie is important because sisterhood is important. I don’t think these women — Katherine, Mary and Dorothy— would have accomplished such an extraordinary thing if they didn’t have the support of each other.”

'Hidden Figures' Stars Discuss Overall Impact of Film

The stars of Hidden FiguresTaraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe – take the cover of Essence magazine’s February 2017 issue, on newsstands January 13.

Here’s what the three stars of the film had to share with the mag:

Taraji, on the importance of the movie: “When I was growing up, people told me out of their mouths math and science are for boys. I was told that over and over. Like, no one showed me how to fall in love with numbers. If I had a teacher like Mrs. Johnson, who knows, I might be on the moon…”

Janelle, on the sisterhood in the film: “They knew that they were stronger together…I think they would not have achieved the level of success they did had they not had one another…”

Octavia, on the impact of her character: “This woman is the mother of all girls who code – Black, White, Latin, Asian, Indian. It all began with Dorothy Vaughn.”
