Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, The New York Times reports.

The 27-year-old Paralympic athlete’s defense team said the law under which he was punished calls for him to serve only one-sixth of the prison term – 10 months – before he can be placed on house arrest.

“I’m just glad it’s over,” June Steenkamp, the victim’s mother, told reporters outside the courtroom.

Oscar was also given a suspended three-year term on separate firearms charges. His sentence starts immediately.

Oscar shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva, 29, through the door of their bathroom back in February of 2013.

Oscar Pistorius Verdict: Judge Finds Paralympic Athlete Not Guilty of Murder

Oscar Pistorius has been found not guilty of premeditated murder after being on trial for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the New York Times reports.

The 27-year-old Paralympic athlete shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva, 29, through the door of their bathroom back in February of 2013.

Judge Masipa said that although she found Oscar to be an evasive witness in his own trial, she found parts of his story credible, including the main part of his story that he thought he was shooting and killing intruders in his home.

Oscar could still face charges of culpable homicide in the case, which would result in jail time. Court is currently in recess until Friday morning – Just Jared will bring updates as the final sentencing is given.

Oscar Pistorius Takes the Stand to Describe the Moment He Shot Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius has taken the stand in the murder trial of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to describe the moments of gunfire on Tuesday (April 8) in Pretoria, South Africa.

“That was the moment everything changed,” the 27-year-old athlete said in the first hand account of what happened (via NBC). “I thought that there was a burglar that was gaining entry to my home. Initially I just froze. The first thing that ran through my mind was that I needed to arm myself.”

“I was afraid … someone was going to start shooting,” he added. “I heard a noise from inside the toilet. Before I knew it, I’d fired four shots at the door. There was ringing in my ears.” He then added that it dawned on him that the person inside the bathroom could be Reeva. “I didn’t want to believe that it could be Reeva inside the toilet. I jumped out and ran my hand along the curtain to see that she wasn’t hiding behind the curtain.”

“I was screaming and shouting the whole time. I don’t think I’ve ever screamed liked that. I was crying out for the Lord to help me,” Oscar said.

Oscar took the stand the day before to tearfully apologize to Reeva‘s family.

“There hasn’t been a moment since this tragedy happened that I haven’t thought about your family,” he added. “I wake up every morning and you’re the first people I think of, the first people I pray for… I was simply trying to protect Reeva. I can promise you when she went to bed that night she felt loved. I’ve tried to put my feelings in words to you several times, but no words ever sufficed.”

Oscar Pistorius Indicted for Murder in Reeva Steenkamp Death

Oscar Pistorius arrives at the Pretoria Magistrates Court for an indictment hearing on Monday morning (August 19) in Pretoria, South Africa.

The 26-year-old sprint runner is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp though he denies the claim, saying he mistook her for an intruder.

Oscar was seen crying and holding hands with his siblings before the hearing started. It is interesting to note that today would have marked Reeva‘s 30th birthday.

During the hearing, a trial date of March 3 was set. The trial will be presided over by a judge as South Africa does not have trial by jury. If convicted of premeditated murder, Oscar will serve a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, according to USA Today.
