'Grey's Anatomy' Boss Reveals If Patrick Dempsey Will Return This Season

Patrick Dempsey made a miraculous return to Grey’s Anatomy earlier this season, as Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) went into a comatose state on the show due to coronavirus.

The 54-year-old actor reappeared as Derek Shepherd in Meredith’s COVID dreams, after he perished in season 11 following a tragic car accident.

In a new interview with Variety, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed again that Derek aka “McDreamy” will be seen “again in the back half of the season.”

Previously, she had stated that there were plans to have him in three more times throughout season 17.

Krista also addressed rumors that more of the original stars, like Eric Dane, Sara Ramirez and even Sandra Oh, would be returning this season with cameos.

“We all have hopes, but we don’t have anything new to report yet,” she shared, specifically about Eric‘s Mark Sloan.

For the other rumors, Krista added that the cast list featured on IMDb was “some glitch”, and most of them would not be appearing.

During the mid-season finale this week, viewers saw Meredith slip back into a comatose state following a COVID high she experienced that had her saving the life of a patient before she collapsed on the hospital floor.

Patrick Dempsey Reveals How His 'Grey's Anatomy' Cameo Came to Be

Patrick Dempsey makes an appearance on today’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, and he’s speaking out about his return to Grey’s Anatomy.

Five years ago, his character, Dr. Derek Shephard, was killed off of the show. On Thursday’s Grey’s premiere, his character made a total surprise appearance.

Ellen pressed Patrick for more info about how many episodes he will appear in.

“That’s a good question, I’m not sure how many [episodes],” Patrick said, adding: “I know I’m throughout this season. He comes back to visit.” The showrunner previously revealed how many episodes Patrick will appear in, and it seems like the appearances won’t necessarily be back-to-back, but instead, sprinkled throughout season 17.

Patrick also revealed how his cameo came to be and it was because of Ellen Pompeo asking if he’d return!

FYI: Patrick is wearing a Vuori Clothing vest during the interview.

'Grey's Anatomy' Showrunner Reveals How Many Episodes Patrick Dempsey Will Appear In This Season

There was a huge surprise during the season 17 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy – the return of Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd.

The 54-year-old actor appeared on the ABC series again as part of Ellen Pompeo‘s character Meredith Grey’s dream sequence.

You might remember that Derek died during a tragic accident in an episode that aired back in April 2015.

Grey’s showrunner Krista Vernoff has confirmed that we’ll be seeing more of Derek this season.

“We will see more of [Derek] this season,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “This was not just a cameo. He will appear three more times.”

She also talked about how she kept the return a surprise from everyone, including cast and crew.

Krista said, “We didn’t tell the writers for the longest time. When she’s walking and she looks as someone is calling to her, and she goes, ‘Derek?’ In the script, I had it as Ellis Grey. And she goes, ‘Mom?’ We read it at the table that way. Nobody knew what we were doing — to the point that when the crew showed up on the day we shot the scene, nobody knew. It was top secret.”

Ellen just revealed the one word she wasn’t allowed to say on TV during season one.

Ellen Pompeo Opens Up About How Sandra Oh's Exit From 'Grey's Anatomy' Affected Her

Ellen Pompeo looked back on both Sandra Oh and Patrick Dempsey‘s exits from Grey’s Anatomy affected her.

The 51-year-old star chatted with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast, saying that Sandra‘s exit weighed on her more than Patrick‘s exit did.

Ellen admitted that she had a fear about Sandra leaving and wondered if there even was “a show without Sandra?”

She added that if she had left along with Sandra, she worried about being typecast.

Ellen went on, saying, “Sandra is a different kind of actor. … You never doubt whether Sandra Oh is gonna work again, right? She’ll work forever, right? But for me, I had to think, Am I gonna work again? Or am I going to be so typecast?”

However, with Patrick‘s exit, Ellen was determined to stay and prove that she could carry the show without “the man”.

“I could’ve left because the man left, which is not a story that I want to tell. Like, ‘He’s not here anymore, so I have to go.’ So that story then becomes, ‘What can I do without the man?’ Because they had put that in my head for so long that I was no good without him,” she says.

Ellen adds that she stayed and one of the reasons was that she wanted “[to] prove to [herself] that they were wrong in all of the things they put into [her] head over all of those years.”
