'Perry Mason' Canceled After 2 Seasons at HBO

Perry Mason has sadly been canceled after two seasons.

The prequel to the classic series, starring Matthew Rhys, was not renewed by HBO for a third season, Deadline confirms.

The news comes a month and a half after the Season 2 finale aired on April 24. The show was executive produced by Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement.

“While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”

The series focused on the origin story of famed defense lawyer Perry Mason, based in 1932 in Los Angeles.

'Perry Mason' Renewed for Season 2 at HBO!

Perry Mason is coming back.

HBO is renewing the drama series for a second season, THR confirmed on Wednesday (July 22).

“It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason. Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season,” said HBO’s Francesca Orsi in a statement.

The show was originally pitched as a feature film for Robert Downey Jr.

If you haven’t watched yet, the show “is based on the character from the Erle Stanley Gardner novels — though it takes place before Mason becomes the defense attorney made familiar by the 1957-66 CBS series. In this Los Angeles noir version, Mason is a low-rent private investigator haunted by his wartime experience in France and suffering from a broken marriage.”

The series stars Matthew Rhys as Mason, with Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Tatiana Maslany and John Lithgow also on the cast.

Robert Downey, Jr. popped into the Perry Mason panel tonight during the virtual ATX Festival and delivered some very exciting news.

The 55-year-old actor and wife Susan, are executive producers on the HBO show which stars Matthew Rhys as the title character.

Robert‘s cameo happened when the moderator asked panelists when the show would premiere and he crashed the party, so he could answer.

“I have been on my heels for 92 minutes,” he shared. “First I would like to say the usual: you’re welcome.”

Robert then revealed Perry Mason would debut on June 21 at 9/8c on the primetime network.

“That’s the slot, by the way. That 9 p.m. Sunday slot, that’s the good one,” he added.

Set in 1931 Los Angeles amidst the Great Depression, Perry Mason is just getting started in his career, when the case of the decade breaks down his door. His relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe a pathway to redemption for himself.

Tatiana Maslany is joining Perry Mason!

The 33-year-old Orphan Black actress has signed on for the lead role of the upcoming HBO series, Deadline confirmed on Friday (April 12).

Matthew Rhys will also star in the series.
