Rent Live's Jordan Fisher Is the First Actor of Color to Play Mark!

Jordan Fisher is set to make history with his performance as Mark Cohen in Rent Live!

The 24-year-old entertainer, best known for his work in the Teen Beach Movie series and for winning Dancing With the Stars, will become the first actor of color to play the role of Mark.

“It was 14 years ago when I decided that my dream role is Mark. I wanted to be the first Mark Cohen of color on Broadway, and then when the show closed, I was like, ‘Aw, I missed my chance. By the time it’s revived I’ll be too old to play it,’” Jordan told Teen Vogue.

“I thought, Why can’t Mark, who is a quintessential white Jewish boy from upstate New York, born into privilege, be a person of color? I know plenty of people that are Jewish that are also people of color and born into privilege. That, nowadays, especially in 2019, isn’t too far-fetched to be believable,” Jordan added.

We can’t wait to see Jordan live out his dreams!

Rent Live's Kiersey Clemons Talks About Playing a Queer Black Woman, Just Like Herself

Kiersey Clemons is opening up about getting to play Joanne Jefferson in Rent Live, a queer black woman just like herself.

The 25-year-old actress has been open about her sexuality since the beginning of her career and she’s had the opportunity to play queer characters in the past as well.

“I’ve played Black queer characters more than once or twice, which a lot of queer people do not get to do,” Kiersey told Out. “I got a tweet and someone said like, ‘This person only plays queer people.’ We never say anything to white men about just playing straight white men who drink whiskey — and they do it all the time!”

Kiersey has been a fan of Rent since she was a teenager and has always found Joanne to be “inspiring.”

“When I was young, I thought that Joanne was so cool,” she said. “I was thrilled by anybody that looked like me.”

Kiersey also commented on how times have changed since Rent debuted in 1996, though the musical is still relevant to today’s political climate.

“Over that amount of time, to see technology and all these things change and yet our country is still kind of the same in how we treat people with illnesses or disabilities or because of the color of their skin or their gender identity or sexual orientation, the themes in this show are still relevant today,” she said.

Rent Live's Brennin Hunt Reveals How He Relates to Roger

You might not know who Brennin Hunt is right now, but you definitely will remember his name after watching his performance as Roger in Rent Live!

The Nashville-based singer previously competed on The X Factor in 2011 and Simon Cowell even told him he has a “brilliant voice.”

In an interview for Rent Live, Brennin revealed how he relates to his character Roger Davis, who is a struggling musician.

“I can relate to his character so much because I’ve been there,” he said. “I’ve been in Nashville as a professional songwriter for many many years, and writing that one song that’s going to change my career has been a struggle.”

“I find myself throughout the day thinking about Roger in the back of my mind, ‘How would he feel in this moment?’ That’s the best way for me to kind of merge my life with his,” he added.

Rent Live's Valentina Talks About Coming Out as Non-Binary

Valentina will be playing the role of Angel Dumott Schunard in Rent Live and she’s ready to take the world by storm!

The 27-year-old entertainer competed on the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2017 and then appeared on the All-Stars season last year.

Valentina, whose real name is James Leyva, is opening up about coming out as non-binary and realizing that she’s not fully male or female.

“Being in drag for so many hours of my day and for so long in my career now, I’ve been wondering: How much do I identify with the femininity of being a woman and how much is put on?” Valentina told Entertainment Weekly. “My coming out as non-binary has been, in context, connected to Angel because I want people to know and understand that Angel is such a beautiful human being…. I hope that through this, people can see what it means to fully be free and to identify freely as yourself — especially when you have the level of community around you to support your truth.”

Angel in Rent, originated on Broadway by Wilson Jermaine Heredia, is also a drag performer.

“Drag helped me be fully aware of my authentic self. When I’m not in full drag, I have shaved eyebrows, a full manicure, and I sit with my legs crossed; those things explain my femininity, but it’s also a part of how comfortable and how feminine I feel inside,” Valentina added. “There’s a shift between how masculine and how feminine I feel that I don’t really feel the need to define if I am male or female, because I feel like both at the same…. Non-binary means you don’t have to be either or.”
