The family argued that the smash hit song copied Marvin’s 1977 song “Got To Give Up” and they sued the guys for copyright infringement.
It was revealed during the trial that sales for the song exceeded $16 million, with Robin and Pharrell taking home more than $5 million each and their collaborator T.I. earning more than $700,000.
Interviews were shown during the trial in which both guys said they were inspired by Marvin‘s song while producing their track, but Robin stated he was high on vodka and Vicodin during the interviews. Pharrell said he only realized the similarities after “Blurred Lines” was already released.
Ultimately, the eight person jury ruled in favor of the Gaye family.
