Roger Federer Explains How He'll Know When to Retire

Roger Federer is on the cover of GQ‘s new issue and he opens up about the moment he will know it is time for him to retire.

Here is what he had to share with the mag:

On when he’ll be ready to retire: “Let’s say I have a tournament. I ask myself, how happy am I to be leaving home? Because it’d be so nice to stay. So am I happy to pack my bags, and walk out the door, and put them in the car, and get in the car, look to the house and say, Okay let’s do this––am I happy in that moment? Or do I wish I could stay longer? Every time it’s been: I’m happy to go. I’m still doing the right thing in my heart. It’s a test.”

On playing Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001: “I was 19 years old. I realized, Oh My God. There’s so much more to tennis than just practice in a cold hall somewhere in Switzerland. This is what tennis could be about. I realized, I want to be back on the court one day, I’d love to compete with these guys on a regular basis, I’d rather play on the bigger court than on the smaller courts… And all of a sudden it started to make sense. Why you’re doing weights. Why you’re running. Why you arrive early at a tournament. Why you try to sleep well at night. We just started to understand the importance of every single detail. Because it makes a difference.”

Roger Federer Pulls out of Rio Olympics, Missing Rest of Tennis Season Due to Injury

Roger Federer has officially pulled out of the 2016 Rio Olympics, and will not compete in any other tennis event this season due to his knee injury.

“I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season. Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year. The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover. It is tough to miss the rest of the year,” the 34-year-old tennis star, ranked number 3 in the world as of June 2016, wrote on his Facebook.

Roger had knee surgery in February and had to miss the French Open in May due to a back injury.

Roger Federer Is 'Not Happy' After Fan Rushes the Court

Roger Federer gets rushed by a fan on the court after competing in the first day of the 2015 French Open on Sunday (May 24) at Roland Garros in Paris, France.

The 33-year-old tennis player was about to leave the court when a young fan rushed down and tried to take a selfie with him. Roger looked surprised to see no security guards trying to intervene.

“I’m not happy about it. Obviously not one second I’m happy about it,” Roger said (via the Associated Press). “It happened yesterday in the practice, too. I think it’s true for all players that you have to feel safe when we play, feel safe on the courts. It shouldn’t happen too often. It’s happened twice in two days and also in 2009 during the final. I think people should react more quickly. First, it should never happen.”

Roger says that he has received an apology from tournament director Gilbert Ysern.
