Sara Bareilles' New Album is Not a 'Musical Theater Record'

Sara Bareilles stops by Barnes & Noble to sign copies of her new book “Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song” on Tuesday (October 6) in New York City.

The 35-year-old singer later performed a show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music featuring a conversation with singer Ben Folds, who wrote the foreword for the book.

Sara is releasing a new album next month featuring the songs from the upcoming Broadway musical Waitress, for which she wrote the music and lyrics. Don’t expect it to sound like a normal Broadway album though.

“I really wanted to take the approach of just treating these songs as I would making them a Sara Bareilles record… I just wanted to be in the space where I could really play with these arrangements and with the orchestrations, so the process was super fun and I had friends come in. I had Jason Mraz guest on the record, I had a friend write string arrangements, I had my music director and her sisters do the background vocals,” Sara told Glamour.

“It was a community effort, and it was kind of fast and furious too—we were in and out of the studio in about a month, which is kind of quick for me,” Sara added. “I wanted the songs to feel very much like I was treating them as if they were on any other record of mine. I didn’t want to make a ‘musical theater’ record. I just wanted to capture these songs in their essence as I would in any other way.”

Sara Bareilles Reveals What 'Love Song' Is Really About

For a long time, Sara Bareilles has been telling everyone that her hit song “Love Song” was written in response to her label asking her to write a love song, but now she reveals that is not true.

“No, nobody ever said that,” the 35-year-old singer told the Huffington Post, adding that the story is a “distilled version of the truth.”

“People sort of want to hear what they want to hear,” Sara said. “It makes for an easy one-liner to be like, ‘So the big bad record label wanted you to write love songs and this is you fighting back.’ It’s not that it’s not true, but it wasn’t that simple.”

Sara says that the inspiration for “Love Song” came from terrible co-writing sessions that her record label wanted her to do.

“The co-writing sessions, I think for me, they came at a time where I was still so unsure of my own edges. In a way, I was still sort of discovering who I was as an artist at that time. And while I don’t think that any of those collaborators had any bad intentions, I just don’t think I was ready to collaborate,” Sara explained.

Even though she sings about not wanting to write a love song, Sara says the hit single really is a love song.

“It was a love song to my craft. It was a love song to my intention, to my heart and soul. I was fighting for the essence of some truth inside of me, which to me is a beautiful love song. It just wasn’t a duet between Peter Cetera and Amy Grant,” she said with a laugh. “It wasn’t going to be the end title in a romantic comedy, at all.”

Make sure to pick up Sara‘s book “Sounds Like Me” to hear stories behind lots of her songs. It is in stores on Tuesday (October 6).

The 58-year-old entertainer dances around, plays games and shares some laughs with her real-life girlfriends, including singer Sara Bareilles, before her husband Tom Hanks walks in to make a surprise appearance in the clip.

“I have always loved having my girlfriends over for dinner. Staying in, instead of going out, frees you up to be totally yourself. No judgments. No one watching,” Rita told People. “You can be loud, crazy, cut loose. I wanted the song to convey that feeling of total fun you have when you are with your girlfriends and how there is no substitute for that.”

“I had thought about what would happen if Tom were to walk in during a real Girls Night In,” Rita continued. “and thought of how when you’re in that moment of utter hilarity, to you and your friends, what that might look like to someone walking into the setting right then.”
