Serena Williams Speaks to Body Positivity in Fashion

Serena Williams is on the cover of Essence magazine’s latest issue.

Here’s what the 37-year-old tennis star had to share with the mag…

On what she looks for in fashion: “Wow. I love fashion, obviously. It has to connect to me, first of all. I like things that are unusual, but also a little classic. It depends: It could be a crazy pop of color, and it’ll totally get me excited. Or it could be something fresh I haven’t seen before. Honestly, I can go in any direction. Just depends on how I feel…”

On body positivity in her fashion line: “We want to be inclusive. We have an extended size, and we call it great because I don’t like the word ‘plus.’ So we call it S Great because every woman is great. Hopefully the word “great” will catch on and people will get rid of the word ‘plus.’”

On the importance of speaking up: “Freedom means standing up and not being afraid to say, ‘I’m here’ or ‘Hear my voice’ or ‘This isn’t what I agreed to’ or ‘This isn’t fair and that isn’t right.’ I’ve done it my whole career. It’s knowing where I’ve come from, knowing my history, in particular, the sport that I’m in. When I first started, there weren’t a lot of people who looked like me. So it was really important to always help other people feel as if this is something they could also be a part of…”

On what fashion means to her:
“My whole career has been really about tennis and fashion. I always try to make a statement when I walk out on the court—to be bold and to be unique and to kind of transcend. I always try to send the message of just being confident and being fierce.”

On criticism of her style:
“People always have things to say when you’re wearing fashion. It could be good things. It could be bad things. I don’t care what people say. I’m like just so past it—you could say whatever you want to say. Honestly, you’re allowed to have your opinion. My life is far too complicated to worry about people that want to say mean things. I have a daughter, I have a family, I have a career. I have too much to worry about.”

On her S by Serena line:
“I tried it before and it didn’t work. Then I sat down and invested in myself and really put a really good effort behind it. Now I really get to express myself. I get to see how you can wear fashion so many different ways and how you can represent yourself. I have this whole big vision of what S by Serena is going to be.”

Joining Serena Williams on the list includes Odell Beckham Jr, Maria Sharapova, and Dwyane Wade.

The issue hits newsstands on Thursday, July 25th – you can check out the full list at SI.com.

Serena Williams Has the Perfect Mic Drop Moment When Asked If She Should Stop Fighting for Equality to Focus on Tennis

Serena Williams dropped the mic during her post-Wimbledon finals press conference on Saturday (July 13) in London, England, when she was asked a question about her dedication to tennis.

“There have been a few comments made in the past couple of weeks…that maybe you should stop being a celebrity for a year and stop fighting for equality and just focus on the tennis. How do you respond to that?” a reporter asked the 23-time Grand Slam champion tennis star.

Serena responded, “The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I’m in my grave.”

Likely, the reporter was referencing comments made by retired tennis pro Billie Jean King, who said, “She’s got a baby, she’s trying to help gender equity, particularly women of color. But it makes it much harder. I would like her to put everything else aside, because she’s got people working on those things. I wish she would just make a commitment for the next year-and-a-half to two years and say, I’m going to absolutely focus on what’s necessary for my tennis, so when I look in the mirror when I’m older then I can go back in my mind and know I gave it everything I had.”

Serena Williams was defeated by Simona Halep during the Wimbledon finals.
