'Sesame Street' Creators Are Suing Studio Behind Melissa McCarthy's Puppet Movie 'Happytime Murders'

Sesame Workshop, the parent company of the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, is suing STX Productions over its new Melissa McCarthy movie The Happytime Murders.

The upcoming movie is “a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show.” (Watch the trailer now!)

The workshop is asking that the studio “simply drop the references to Sesame Street from The Happytime Murders marketing materials – a relatively small burden compared to the devastating and irreparable injury Defendants are causing.”

The poster for the movie has the tagline “No Sesame. All Street.”

The plaintiffs say that the “Defendants have refused, and the confusion and tarnishment are building, as evidenced in numerous social media postings.”

The Happytime Murders is directed by Brian Henson, the son of the late Jim Henson, who rose to fame developing characters for Sesame Street and later creating The Muppets.

In the clip, Ernie sings about his rubber duckie with lines like, “Rubber Duckie, it is a connection/ It doesn’t have to be a tubby session, ya/ Take my day from zero to 11, ya.”

The Spanish-language chorus then follows: “Oh, el patito, es mi favorito/ Donde quiera que vaya hace su sonido/ El patito es tu buen amigo/ El patito.”

'Sesame Street' Introduces First Character with Autism - Meet Julia!

Sesame Street is introducing a character named Julia, who has autism.

Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president of U.S. Social Impact, spoke about the addition to the popular children’s show.

“In the U.S., one in 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder,” Jeanette said (via the Chicago Tribune). “We wanted to promote a better understanding and reduce the stigma often found around these children. We’re modeling the way both children and adults can look at autism from a strength-based perspective: finding things that all children share….Just as we look at all children as being unique, we should do the same thing when we’re looking at children with autism.”

The first episode to introduce Julie – titled “Meet Julia,” airs Monday, April 10 on HBO.
